Turning a job down

I'd never met the employer or had interview but picked up a temping assignment through a recruitment agency end of last week pretty much immediate start now in the somewhat fortunate position of being able to turn it down, would an email be acceptable? or am I best to try and call the agency - I would happily have called a mobile no over the weekend but only ever been supplied with the office number

I did also speculative send in my CV to the company direct :Dwhilst unemployed, unaware until it was to late that this was the same place for the temp assignment I was registering for and potentially being forwarded to - within hours on the same day that recruitment agent offered the placement, the company then also tried to call saying they had my CV!!!! - Don't know if when such an assignment they see candidates CV's from the recruitment agency!? that seemed bizzare, now I didn't take any action on returning company call because I felt like I was between a rock and hard place with doing a trial which wasn't confirmed as successful until end of day Friday (and even then it took some pushing to find out if we were being offered employment) but at the same time didn't want to lose my temp placement if the trial said no thanks, didn't want to muddy the waters further and plus wasn't sure what the motive was in calling to offer me an interview when I was lined up as a temp - I could only imagine my name/CV hasn't been supplied to the company by the recruitment agent? I've also been debating whether the agent needs telling about this?

I know I feel awful at mucking them around I wish I had told them about the trial with other company - in my email to the agency should I keep it brief? I do realise they won't want to entertain me again, it isn't an option of trialling them both because dates now clash so I've had to choose one over the other, both weigh out same in term of risks/pro's/con's

Thanks for tuning in, I wish I was one of these that could write a line of 2 without the need of painting pictures!

    I'm not sure I follow.

Given you talk about wanting to call a mobile number - are you meant to be starting two jobs on Monday?

I dont follow either but a phone call is more professional than an email. If you are starting work and cannot call when the office opens, then send an email and follow it up later in the day

    That seemed bizarre.

So you applied for a temporary position through a recruitment agency to a company you had previously sent a speculative CV to.

The recruitment agency offered you the position you had applied for, whilst you were trialling a job for another company (through another agency?).

What did you say to the recruitment company who offered you the job?

You didn't know the outcome of the trial until late on Friday. It was successful. During the trial, the company who were looking for a temp called but you didn't answer or return the call.

You now want to turn down the offered, temporary job.

You could have rung the recruitment agency late on Friday - even a voicemail message was better than nothing.

First thing tomorrow, call the recruitment agency who offered you the job and explain what's happened and that you're turning down their job.

They need to get someone in place asap and you probably won't have been the only candidate whose details were passed on to the company.

    Call. Don't email. Call asap.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
  • Quick start temp assignment offered Thursday afternoon, 1 of 5 starters from an assignment previously placed on hold - the company also tried offering me a job interview from my own contact weeks ago

Following JSA regs (which I come of tomorrow) I couldn't stop job hunting

in fact I took it upon myself to cancel a job interview Friday made it clear they intend to tell the jobcentre - despite me knowing I'd have employment for tomorrow

We got a decision from a trial period company at gone 6pm Friday to return this coming week, which was pushed for as I think employer would have had a 2nd weeks trial if we hadn't, they previously wrote a letter for JC saying we had 1 weeks trial but wouldn't even confirm then there was a job offer

I think I'll keep it brief I've now got a perm position as far as I'm concerned which outweighs a temp one - my friend says just email, I can't phone the company because I don't know if they are expecting me considering I'd be a recruitment agency employee that's my understanding?

Phone call it is then, I am fortunate enough to meet their opening time, just don't know if they need me to put it in writing because notice is also needed to be in the written method, I mean telephone messages can be ignored that was my worry

Normally with an Agency the contract you sign allows for you to terminate a job assignment with no notice.
It is done that way as you are employed by them as a temp, so at any time may get offered a perm role elsewhere that was gained through your own contacts.

It also works the other way in that the company you are on assignment for can also tell you at any time not to come back.

  • Thanks x

I remember signing with the agency but them being clear at the time it was unexpectedly put on hold and had also more recently sounded from the agent they had culled a lot of people anyway (which I'm surprised was something admitted to) so it will be no skin of their nose, no big loss, I'm sure, if there is something I've learnt from the past few months it has to be trust nothing! anything can go anyway!

Decided I'm not even going to mention the company contact, anything to keep the peace as best I can
  • Update:

Possibly ill choosen decision to call, will know for future these things are best any other way, but surely they wouldn't have seen an email any quicker what with switching computers on

Of more importance I was asked where I had got a perm position !!! jesus I couldn't make it up if I tried, don't know if I'll have now made a whole lot more trouble for myself, should have just not bothered turning up I bet :p

I hope you weren't stupid enough to tell them the name of the company you're going to.
