Tax Advice on Forms Please

Son has just started his first job after graduating and had his first payslip - Tax Code shown as 944L -which would be fine - HOWEVER

He made some money earlier in the tax year that was paid direct to him and now he needs to declare it.

What forms does he need to do - is it register for Self Assessment?

It should only be for this financial year as next year it will just be his earnings from his current job.

This is his first job his tax code is probably not 944L. Look just after the L
and tell us what is there. IE Mth 1, Wk 1, Noncum.
The only thing that is constant is change.

Did he complete a P46 or Starter Checklist as they are called now. If so did he say this had been his only job since April?

It shouldn't be necessary for him to register for SA. Just get him to phone up HMRC and say that he has some untaxed payments that he wishes to declare. They will advise him what's best to do.

It might be 944L without any suffix if he has completed a P46 to say this is his only job since April.

Yes definitely just says 944L - think also month 7. Yes he would have said it was his only job - as that is true.

The money he made was from something he did online and he doesn't want to get into trouble by not declaring it - but was asking me for tax advice - which I don't really know much about.
