Steamed pudding cooking times

Morning. I have googled but can't find much info that doesn't refer to dense christmas puds; and thought you knowledgeable people would be the people to ask.

I am planning on making a steamed pudding this evening, which is a sponge type pudding with a little stewed fruit and a sauce. I am adapting from a few different recipes, however all of them are for individual servings steamed in the oven for 20-30 mins.

I want to make a large pudding on the hob in a 1 litre basin. How do I adjust the cooking time? I assume oven/hob makes no difference, but what about the size of the pudding? Do I need to cook it for longer?

Thank you in advance :)

  • I have an old "homecraft book" and it has a recipe for a steamed syrup/treacle pudding and says to steam for two hours.

The recipe uses a 2 pint bowl.

    hope this helps.

I always make a sponge pudding in the microwave - it is so simple and lovely and light. Says 10 mins but I usually give it a bit longer as sometimes it is not cooked in the middle. You can adapt it to whatever you have in the storecupboard, stewed/ tinned fruit or jam. Mine usually serves 4 very generous portions. Must be cheaper than having the hob on for such a lot time and not all the steam that goes with it!
  • Thank you all

I did mine for slightly over an hour but the middle collapsed. I actually followed a bonafide recipe for the sponge bit, so no idea what happened. Might have still eaten it though...

No microwave in this house. I don't miss it, apart from in rare instances like this
