FM/DAB radios - digital still powered on FM?

Do FM/digital radios keep the voracious digital chips powered when using FM or do you receive normal low-powered FM if not listening to DAB? Does it depend on the model?

    Why would the designer choose to do it that way? I'm sure it uses less power when on FM.
