hawaii five 0

Hi

I need to organise cheap table decor, garlands or anything to do with a Hawaii theme by next Friday for a friends 50th. Any ideas gratefully received. Room, food and DJ is booked and invites out inviting friends to a fancy dress theme, but that's about it. Thank you so much in advance for any ideas.

sounds fun...pineapples cut up and filled with fruit salad as a table decoration...hawaii pizza served...ham and pineapple on sticks...dressing up shops sell garlands and blowup trees...and grass skirts if that is your thing

If you can rustle up a few helpers, you can make coloured flowers for garlands out of tissue paper. Cut out circles with scalloped edges in different coloured tissue paper, put two different coloured ones together and twist into a flower shape. Secure with sticky tape and string together into garlands.

You could organise a limbo dancing contest too, but make sure the contestants know that the responsibilty for any injuries is theirs alone, and they should be sure they are fit and well enough to do something like that.

Drinks - Hawaiian cocktails, based on white rum, coconut and pineapple juice maybe? Or a tropical fruit punch?

Another thought, if you know someone artistic you could have a backcloth showing a volcano, and using clever lighting with sound effects and some kind of smoke generating device, have the volcano threatening to erupt? The DJ might know where to source a smoke machine.

  • Surf boards, deep blue table clothes, sea shells.
Flowers hair clips for the ladies, ask guests to wear flashy shirts,
crape paper palm tree frons, raffia grass skirts. Beach mats if you have any.
Will try and think of some more.

Definitely shells for table decorations. You can get ceramic containers shaped like shells which could be useful if you happen across any (charity shop?) And bright coloured fabrics/tablecloths, etc.

And if you go to that 'aloha friends' website mentioned above, do not be tempted to follow their suggestion to make poi (mashed taro root) which is considered a 'national dish' or just about.

I once went to Hawaii on holiday, went to a luau and was persuaded to try poi. It looks like purple runny mashed potato. That's bad enough. Now get some dirty socks and give them a good sniff. Imagine how they would taste. That's what poi tastes like.

But anything with pineapple and/or coconut would be good!
