£18k is a ridiculous price for a kitchen.

I think OP has got confused between "want" and "need".

My thoughts entirely. We fitted a full kitchen, tiled floors and walls, dropped the ceiling, appliances for under £7k. Units were assembled with solid wood doors.

I reckon at least £8k of the quote is margin for the kitchen company.

Ikea have their place and if fitted well can last but as far as I know the cabinets and wirework are the same on their expensive range as their cheaper ranges. the only thing different is the quality of the doors.
Well the shells tend to be the same on most kitchens that i've seen, but then they don't need to be better quality, they're not (or shouldn't be) getting worn and used on a daily basis like the worktops and sinks/door and drawer fronts etc.

I've been in Ikea and looked at the entire kitchen set up and the quality is vastly superior to anything you'll find in highstreet shops such as B&Q and the like. AND they're really reasonably priced.

Like i said re quality - they do oiled solid oak worktops. Nobody can argue that solid oak is 'tat' because it's just not. Ikea, like everything, is probably a 'get what you pay for' scenario, go cheap go twice.

We put in a DIY kitchen many years ago, swapped design around when we changed the layout and extended and got it all fitted by a joiner. had tailor made insets where required. Total cost around £5k for kitchen and utility. As appliances needed replacing bought better quality German brands etc. Got property valued by estate Agents and without exception they all remark on the beautiful kitchen - why because it's classical design ligh oak.

Point is with a bit of shopping around and thought and using proper craftsmen, you will have a lovely kitchen for a lot less than £18k, which as you ar having to borrow you can't afford!

    When spending 18k .A cooker suddenly becomes a range.....Its a cooker...Good luck..Reminds me of 2006 again...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

My Ikea kitchen was done about 15yrs ago and looks as good as new.

My £50 second hand kitchen was done 15 years ago and is also doing well, not quite looking good as new (it never did) but it is still perfectly adaquate.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
