Hi all,
Is it just me or has the EMPIRE BUILDING genre gone completely off the rails... Remember The Settlers 3, 4, Dark Colony, Age of Empires - why is this not being revamped to 2013 standards.
I want unlimited units - massive warfare and huge empires - IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK? lol :rotfl:
Does anyone have any suggestions on good current or upcoming empire building games?

The Civilization Series is incredible.
Civ III was my favourite I think, but Civ IV also was ridiculously good.
Never got into V properly as my laptop couldn't handle it.
When is Civ VI coming?0 -
i had a look on a few sites and forums and it looks like the only confirmed time of release is 2014 - doesnt help much... lol
Everyone is ask who has ever got into Civ says it is amazing, I just never could see how or why... You dont actually get to control armies do you? Or build them? Screen viewing is from such a height you can only see a single soldier??
How does it actually work?0 -
I can only suggest you pick up and play Civ III
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Civilization-III-Complete-PC-CD/dp/B0017TDGG8
£5
Any description I give won't do it justice, Civ 4 is even better but more complicated to get in to so for £5 and hours of fun, please have a look at Civ III - graphics are a little old now but it is not about the graphics it is about the gameplay.
It is a turn based strategy game, and it is absolutely empire building on the grandest scale. You are tasked with "building a civilisation, that will stand the test of time". This means leading it from 4000 BC to the modern era, it becomes so personal to you because you have built it.
You have to decide where to place your cities, what improvements to make to them, what units to build, whether to be an aggressive or passive civ. You have to make money (gold), you have to decide which technology paths to follow and in what order. You have to negiotiate with the leaders from the other Civs, some will become allies and some will become enemies, there will be land grabs for areas of key resources, there will be naval warfare, there might even be nuclear warfare.
It short it is awesome.
The units yes are just depicted as a little man, or tank or horse or whatever, but yes you build armies, you mix your units with defensive ones, attacking ones, bombarding ones.
Every game is different.0 -
Caesar 3 is awesome. Can get it on GOG.com, it's old though.0

Personally having played these types of games since the Spectrum days, I would would vote for 2 games in slightly different categories:
1) Medieval War series - absolutely brilliant in terms of battle simulation where there is a "real time" element in addition to the turn-based system.
2) Civilisation 4 (with the Beyond the Sword add-on). This is my favorite for two reasons. Firstly the basic game is brilliant in itself, but equally importantly the developers have allowed the public to create "mods" for this games that can be downloaded free - lots of different worlds, scenarios, new units etc. This allows almost endless gameplay long after you have tried all the options that come with the game - for example I have been engaged in an epic world struggle for domination on a mod called "The Road to War" (loosely base on the build up of industrialised warfare in the run up to WW1) for almost a month now, on and off!
On the downside my wife thinks I am a sad git.............but then she watches I'm a Celebrity!0
