Am I likely to be turned down?

So, I need to buy a new decent laptop and wouldn't wanna wait to save up for it as my current one is about to die I think.
I was thinking of trying getting it on finance through Ebuyer.
I checked my credit report on Noddle and I don't have a lot on there. I am not on the electoral roll, and I've had a contract with 3 since July that's always been paid on time and I managed to get with no credit history (it's for the Galaxy S4 on The One Plan).
I have a basic bank account with Lloyds Bank. I went for the basic one as I just needed a bank account and don't need overdraft. I also thought a basic one is easier to get and it suits my needs anyway. Lloyds Bank is on my report as a lender with up to date written on the side, which looks strange to me since I have no overdraft.
I've never ever spent more than what was in my account, which I've had since December last year. I've been self employed since April.
I live with my partner who works full time and earns good money I'd say, above average. He's got a CCJ, though, apparently. His mum bought a table off a catalogue and never paid it back, but the purchase was in my bf's name so he is the one with the CCJ now.
Based on this info, am I likely to be turned down for a purchase on finance? I am thinking of buying a laptop around £450 max and would like to pay it back in 12 months max.
Can't ask bf to lend me money and wanna pay for the laptop myself.
I can't get a credit card as I don't meet the income threshold.
If I can't get a finance, I will just have to save up for a laptop I guess.
I don't demand to be given credit, so if you tell me it'd be hard for me to get finance, I won't even try. I myself think I won't be able to. Thanks in advance.

I think you are likely to be turned down due to not being on the electoral roll, having a very limited credit history and from the sound of it not earning very much.
That said the only way to know for certain would be to try - what is the reason you don't want to try an application?

Your boyfriend's CCJ won't be impacting you though as you don't appear to have any joint accounts.

You say you cannot get a credit card due to not earning enough - how much are you actually earning? as there are cards around with very low income thresholds.

It would be sensible to register to be on the electoral roll now so that another time this wouldn't count against you.

We had our laptop given an overhaul by a local guy who upgraded memory, RAM and other bits I didn't understand either and it cost about £100 and the laptop is much faster and better than new.

Don't automatically assume that you need a new laptop.

  • I don't earn enough to have a taxable income, let's put it like that .
Yeah, I thought everything is against me, but I know I'd pay everything back and I know I wouldn't wanna get this small credit if I didn't think I could afford it. If I had financial problems, I know I have bf and my family as well who could help, but I don't wanna leech off of them. I am very careful with money and having been around a person like bf's mum who has debts with the Council etc, I don't wanna end up like that.
I know they can't trust my word anyway :p
On Ebuyer they just mention you need to be working at least 16 hours a week, and not have a bad credit history. They also don't want single people. That's why I thought they might enquire about the person living with me.
I don't know... if I try and likely get turned down, will it affect my humble credit file?
Putting aside the other factors, is being self employed in general a problem? I don't run a business, I provide a service for a company as a freelancer and I am therefore classed as self employed.

I am gonna try and register to be on the electoral roll.

    Thanks for the replies.

    It's a !!!!py netbook ;)

The problem is I have to fiddle with the charger a little now to make it charge. My previous netbook had the same problem, and it was the connector in the netbook, not the charger as I had initially thought.
I have a feeling this one has the same issue. It's not worth repairing it as the repair would probably cost half the value of the netbook at least. I also need a computer to do my job. I can't be without one.
That's all I could afford to buy outright and besides the charger issue, it's painfully slow.

I assume you mean you don't earn enough to pay tax, rather than you don't have a taxable income.
Still there are some credit cards that have a minimum income level of £5k (although without being on the e/r you would still likely struggle to get one).

Might be worth asking your bank if you could upgrade to a full account and if they would give you a small overdraft of £500.

Or might the company you freelance for be prepared to offer you a small loan to be repaid from your next couple of month's sales invoices?

Anythings you could sell to raise money?

Aside from that I guess the best option is to start saving as much as possible now and hope the laptop lasts long enough to save enough.
Is there anyway you can increase your income/get a second job to help with that?

  • Yes, I meant that :o

I can't ask for loans, no, but I can try and work longer hours and get more money. I have been looking for other jobs I can take on as well.

I was gonna ask about the bank account upgrade, not because of the overdraft, but to be able to withdraw from any cash point. Would I be able to ask Lloyds Bank to upgrade my account?. As I have already said, I have never had problems managing my account so far (I haven't had it for that long, though, I know).

I have decided I will buy a new charger, hoping it's not the netbook's connector the problem, and upgrade the RAM to make it a bit speedier. I will save up for a laptop and buy outright when I have the money. It seems to me that's all I can do and maybe it's for the best.
Nothing valuable to sell no. Just clothes lol.
    Thanks again for the answers.

If you have had the lloyds account since December and ran it fine I wouldn't expect there to be any problem upgrading.

If the power socket inside the netbook is broken, I got mine fixed for around £100 and my laptop is still soldiering on many months later. Just a thought.
