Money from sewing??

Hi everyone ... My first time posting so I hope I'm in the right place :)

I am currently on maternity leave and have started thinking of ways I might be able to increase my income to hopefully spend a bit more time at home with my children. I am very crafty and usually quite good (if I do say so myself :-/ ) at anything that involves making/ doing. One thing I've always wanted to learn but not got round to is how to use my sewing machine that was bought and shoved away in the loft for a rainy day!!

I am just wondering if it is viable to make money with sewing projects within a few months of learning to sew? It's something I'd love to have a go at but I don't know if I'm being a bit bold thinking I can learn to sew and begin selling items within months. Obviously I'm not hoping to become a millionaire just hopefully keep the kids in shoes and coats and maybe myself in chocolate!!

I would love to hear from anyone who has made a bit of money from sewing at home or anyone who has any advice....

Many thanks in advance :-)

  • I would say it's possible to make a few quid if you go for something simple. I'm not an advanced seamstress by any means, but I used to make plastic bag stores, peg bags, school gym bags etc. Not for sale, but they looked perfectly ok. The question is, as always, where to sell your work.

Not as interesting as craft, but there's money in doing alterations. You could advertise locally- local shops, gumtree etc.

Often one thing can lead to another and something more interesting.

There are lots of craft selling sites on FB, always worth having a look at them.

Try local dance schools / skating clubs. I can't sew and haven't the time to learn, but when children are into dancing they often need special outfits for competitions and shows. I find it very hard to find someone who will make them and would be prepared to pay. I know many other parents are in the same position as me.
