how do you deal with debt for someone who is very ill?

I hope there is someone out there that will be able to help with my situation.

My mother is very ill and is unable to manager her money or accounts. She has previously built up debts with credit cards and as we are unable to access her bank account some of the payments have been missed. To be honest we have been more focused on her health and well being rather than the letters that have been coming through the door, but has got to the stage where solicitors are being involved which she is finding very upsetting.

My sister and I are now trying to sort it all out and figure out who she owes etc and are also applying for Lasting power of attorney which should be done in the next month or so.
We were thinking of writing to her creditors in the mean time and explaining the situation and offering a token jesture, like £1 until we are in a position to be able to discuss her accounts.

Do you think this is a good idea? We arnt really sure how to start, but thought if we could ask them to put the accounts on hold until we have the power of attorney then it would stop the charges going up.

As she does not work the only income she has is from benefits, some of which is used towards the household bills so she will not be able to afford to pay all the money back at once, but we are hoping to arrange some payment plans or something.

Unfortunetly the prognosis is not very good and she will deteriorate in the future, especially her speech and mental capabilities.

Like I said we just don't really know where to start so would appreciate any help out there

Thanks

  • Maybe give the CAB a call?

Doubt the creditors will respond to you til power of attorney is sorted due to data protection act.

Once you have this, I would take a look at the Stepchange debt charity website or ring them to see what they advise. At this stage, you can advise the creditors that you have power of attorney and are talking yo. Debt charity, then they are supposed to give you a months breathing space.

    Good luck

  • Have a look at the National Debtline website - it has lots of advice and sample letters for you to send to creditors.
