I had a call the other week from a Internation call centre for some company offering me cheaper rates than BT. I told her, that i did not have a telephone, that threw her! I hung up

    LOL, nice one :rotfl:

Thanks everyone. I'll tell them to put it in writing from now on. Though I'll miss playing around with them, they try to change the agreement and tell me all about their new 'policy', I tell them I have a policy too, the conversation goes on and on until I tell them what I'm going to pay and when. Then they agree :D

It can be so much fun talking to cold callers- I once had a window company call and said they were offering special deals could they come and give me a free estimate. I spent about twenty minutes telling them all sorts of things (running up their bill) then arranged an appointment. You should see how p'd off the bloke was when he turned up - I had the windows replaced only a month before - so I didn't need them................Well it was their fault they didn't ask what conditions the windows were in on the phone!

Once my OH was talking to someone selling conservatories. He spent about 1 hour on the phone with him. The salesman then asked where my OH lived so that he could come round and measure up...." xxxx street, its a first floor flat on the right". Strangely enough he didn't want to talk after he'd found that out.

I always refuse these types of calls (normally just to annoy them) and ask they put things in writing!! They dont like it but what can they do!!!!!! Ha ha

Snap - thats what I do too - mainly just to annoy - I know its them but I suppose you can never be too sure :D

I had a call like that from natwest. I refused to tell them. I asked them to confirm who THEY were.

I did the same with Natwest as the lady phoning me had an australian accent. I refused to give any details as i didnt know who "the call ecntre" was aparently its natwest mastercard. She was fine about it and said if i was unsure about who they were to phone the number on the back of my statement and and speak to someone else. If they are genuin they shouldn't object to this and if they do then i supose it could be questionable. In fact when i did phone natwest the lady i then spoke to said i had done the right thing considering i didnt know who they were. Why couldnt they just say natwest

I too get very annoyed about calls from companies for all sorts of things, I have recently taken to telling them the person they are looking for has had a tragic accident fatally tripping while rushing to answer a canvasser on the phone...that usually stumps them.
However recently I was contacted by capital one about my credit card with them, I had just transferred a large debt to them and was following MSE advice about not spending on the card. I thought they were keen for me to activate the card and so avoided engaging with them in case they were attempting to force me into this. I blocked all enquiries with similar comments to those in other messages. This wasn't the end of it though, without prompting from me they wrote to me; someone had stolen my identity and had been spending on my card. I felt a little embarassed as I had been doing all I could to avoid them and all they were trying to do was help. In the end all bogus sales were wiped and a new account was set up by them. The TV ad with info about help with identity theft is certainly worth considering as an additional feature.

Had a call recently where I was asked to confirm my details. I said I wasn't comfortable due to fraud risks etc. The guy on the phone was very helpful, and said if I gave him every other character, he'd give me the ones in between.

So between us, we spelt out my DOB, account number and address!! That way, we were both happy that the other was genuine.
  • I never speak to antone who calls and refuses to tell me why they are calling. Chances are that they are trying to sell you something.......................

Yes I agree with you loosehead, definitely, they are usually trying to sell you something. I just say now 'let me stop you there, if you are trying to sell me something forget it, thankyou and goodnight' in the style of john cleese! I can't be doing with cold callers. I usually 'accidentally' give my old phone number out to banks and suchlike, and I am exdirectory too., but I still get them some times. My mum, on the other hand gets so many cold calls, she is 75 and she has a wicked sense of humour, she usually replies with 'hello big boy I have been waiting for you to call, - have you been a naughty boy today?'... in a sultry voice, and tells me it is usually met with stunned silence! and then she pretends to be bonkers and says something like 'no the vicar won't be coming for tea, my dear,' etc, etc, . I have told her to use telephone preference service, but she said no, she's having fun with these calls... I like to say in these situations such as the calls, usually bang on mealtimes.. when they say'I am doing a public opinion poll' (yes, I think, you can have my opinion right enough..lol!!) I just say 'hold on duckie I'll just go get her' and leave the phone off thus blocking their line., and even play horrible music down the phone for ages to them..ha payback time eh?! I also had a call when I replied, they told me to confirm who I am!! I said 'I am the person you have just called' - who are you more to the point! and they said you have to tell us first,so I said no you tell me who you are! they won't and I also assume that if it is genuine then they will write to me.
