What would you do ?

Hi,

I am currently looking for a new job  and I have 2 interviews coming up :j

Ist one is for an admin position in our town centre, mon-fri, decent wage(full time) and I could walk/get bus/get lift from hubby to get there and back. I have some admin experience but have never really wanted to work in an office. Pay is 1k lower than I'm on now.

2nd job is for a beauty counter at a busy Boots store where I used to work. I know a few people who still work there and I know the lady who would be my boss so to speak. I would have work 30 hours a week which would include saturdays, late nights and maybe sundays. I would have to travel about 30 mins each way. Pay is ok but could earn more than I do now with commission earned. Ive always wanted to work on a beauty counter and I would be trained in a new skill.

My debate is if i get offered the job in town I would not have to buy and run a car. I currently have a company vehicle so I dont pay tax or insurance. The Lancome job I would have to runa car and it would cost quite a bit in petrol, plus I may be bringing home up to £200 a month less that I do now

If I was lucky enough to get offered both jobs what would you do ?

which would you prefer to do...... if you removed pay/travel costs.......

sometimes the more enjoyable job makes up for if it happens to less pay/more travel costs......
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

I would love the Lancome job, it what ive always wanted to do and the late nights and weekends wouldnt seem so bad as i'll only be working 30 hours a week not 40. I dont mind the amount of time it takes either. I would go on a weeks training course and it will mean I can pretty much work for any beauty company once i'm trained. Even though I wouldnt want to move stores.

I just never saw myself working in an office as I'm more of a people person and good at selling than just sitting at a desk all day.

I also dont want to work full time in a job i dont like. I know that I will need to enjoy it and I wont know that unless I try :o

I guess it depends if you really *need* the extra money.

If you don't, it's an easy decision.

I presume that if you have a company vehicle, then you are paying tax on this benefit in kind. If you no longer have the benefit, then you have a tax saving to factor into the equation.

Either post some details of the benefit in kind charge here so we can tell you how much you will save, or ask the payroll dept of your current employer how much the car costs you in tax to have.

Its the company vehicle not mine, its not set up like a normal 'company vehicle', its used only for business.

regards to idiophreak i need to earn what I do now ideally, so with the Lancome job I could bring home what I do now and maybe a little bit more or less each month. But to run a car will cost me about £200 a month. Also to take into account my Mum is going to pay off some or all of my loan :A with some inheritance she is getting soon so I wont be paying off £150 a month off that, maybe still a bit if she doesnt pay it all.

Even if I work in town I still think I will want my own car.

If you get offered the beauty job and turn it down in favour of the admin job, I think you would always regret it. Take it and live your dream - you're going to get a car anyway so the "I can walk to town" isn't a real issue.

If there is one thing that I've learnt as I've got older, its that sometimes you have to take a risk. I've always taken the safe option and I now look back and wonder "what if".

    Thanks guys and gals !

I dont want to take the admin job and be bored stiff just answering the phone and filing (i'm sure theres more to it than this) and maybe working with peolple who I dont get on with/bit boring, when I could take the job that i Know i will love and will be good at (spent 8 yrs working at Boots and am brill at selling)also I know the girls on the counter. I think I would still get a car even if I worked in town so full-time-mum is right on that one!

I'm all for taking risks !! lets just hope I get an offer, gotto get thru interview first!
