When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.
But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...
Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending. :money:
Morning :wave: Oh my what a storm! I can't get a train because they are cancelled at the moment, and really don't want to drive. Think I'm going to have to phone the person who I have meetings with and say I'm going to be late
Anyway DFW things today:
* [STRIKE]checked banking
[/STRIKE]* BLD from stores
* [STRIKE]Pork joint in the SC[/STRIKE]
* do a load of washing
* NSD
* call Victoria Plumb as parts still haven't arrived! :mad:
* [STRIKE]email oh and ask him to print form [/STRIKE]
* send off breakdown claim.
* return very dress
* [STRIKE]text bff and arrange a time to meet up[/STRIKE]
* email ex-mil
* order plaster boards for delivery Thursday
* received email from tiles from ebay. £200 less than in local shop
Can't think of anything else I need to do. Have a good Monday everyone x

Morning all,
Today's small positive things:
*Laundry done overnight on Economy 7 tariff. All on heated airer which won't be switched on till tonight.
*Try drying some of it on line. Rain stopped now & looks blowy enough to be worth a go.
*Did rubber chicken. Did roast dinner last night, all divvied up to do a minimum of another 3 day's of meals, 3 packed lunches plus carcass in slow cooker for stock.
*Made bread in BM, also dough for bread rolls by hand.....wanted to check something from 'Bake-off', which I thought wouldn't work, but it did, so I've saved a tiny bit of electricity there too.
*No heating on except for bathroom heater for an hour first thing. It's just not been cold enough yet.
*Checked out the electricity meters to see if putting the clocks back has changed the switchover time to Economy 7 tariff. All as expected.
*Cast on some nice soft merino wool from my stash to knit little pair of socks for friend who is having a baby.
*Pull home grown leeks.
*Rounded up another basket of windfall pears.
*Shared bath water.
*mr f's nice porridge for breakfast using huge bag of yellow-stickered oats I bought the other week.
*Dye hair as roots look terrible. Can't believe what I used to pay to have this done in a salon!
*Did a couple of surveys
*Entered a competition.
I reckon that'll do for today. Hope everyone ok, & storm is now going over. It hasn't been as bad here as we were expecting.
foxgloves x2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!0 -
Morning all, :wave:
Thanks for the starter DNM. Hope everyone is still in one piece, we are thankful to be unaffected up here. I remember how bad things were in Kent in 1987. Hopefully deliveries into work won't have been affected and I will have work to do when I get there.
The List:
Post parcel using CollectPlus (Link) instead of Royal Mail. Saved £10! Will be using alternatives to eBay in future.
Check online banking.
Lay on the sofa all afternoon doing nothing in place of sleep before night-shift.
Work. Take packed lunch and own drinks.
Decide how much overtime I can realistically manage on top of 40 hour week. Desperately need to clear the debt but also need to recognise I'm not batwoman and I don't need a dose of clinical exhaustion. Hours will be increasing to 50 in a week too.
Entertainment: watching DVD from cupboard.

Good morning everyone, been rather AWOL myself but back on the wagon after sorting through things already bought for Christmas out of pound shops and realised Father Christmas has nearly 80 items for the stocking! Yes you read right! Excessive, addiction and very very bad considering I have debt, don't have much spare money and to be honest I am upset and ashamed of myself.
So Monday is here which means new start! No more over spending and time to get myself sorted out!! So I will be a regular, I need it! I want to be in control!
I have been looking into slow cookers - any advice?
Also heated airers - are they any good/every efficient? I tend to wack my gas Central heating up for hours to get things dry - hence the gas being double the amount I pay on electric
Today's list :
- Check online banking - done and shocking!
- call water company re water meter (am thinking of going on to one as pay ridiculous amounts - advice welcome)
- all meals from stores
- list 5 items on eBay
- iron 10 items (am very behind with this)
- refrain from putting heating on
- start making a list of ideas to make me rather money saving so I can chip away at the debt!
Thank you and hope you all have a lovely day xxA new year, new month, new focus and new hope - must stay on the right path for my dreams to come true![/CENTER]
It's not all about central heating and spot lights - cherish wrapping up warm and using candles! It's the small things in life!!0 -
Hi everyone

Back to normal today – back to work after a lovely 10 days off
Had a lovely holiday – was relatively DFWish. Didn’t quite work to budget – overspent by about £100 but worked out about £600 for both of us all in – flights/accomm/spending – so quite pleased with that. Next year we’re going to splash out a bit more up front and look for an all inclusive holiday.
Checked my credit report – debt has come down about £200ish this month – not so good considering what I pay – need to really work at paying the high interest ones off and get snowballing for real…
Off to check out winter boots in tk maxx – they’re usually a good deal.
Getting shopping delivered - £20 off first ocado shop and £6 back via quidco – not too bad at all :T – also managed to get loads of ‘essentials’ (not quite the same as Mr T’s ‘value’) so was actually v good value. Also 1 hr time slots and free delivery :T
Moved yoga class to cheaper hall this week, saving £7.50 on venue. Depending on how it is I might move it permanently as that saving could make all the difference on how viable it is to run.
Still haven’t given in about getting a car… Really really want one. Think I’ll probs do a long term lease type deal @ £130 a month. Just need the deposit as I don’t have another car to trade in.
Doing a bit of clearing out – was nice to get rid of some old clothes and make some space.
Sold something and put the proceeds to cc#1.
Made some other PADs to cc#1
So – think that’s DFW things with me…
Catch up with y’all soon

I can definitely recommend a slow cooker. I think it's brilliant, just bung it all in and then in the evening the meal is cooked. also I bung things in for soups. Have a look on the old style forum as there is a thread all about SCs
re the heated dryer. when we were looking into getting ours it worked out to be 1p ph to heat. I put my washing on, cover with a sheet and most things dry overnight

Hey all
Thanks to DNMS for starting us off today.
Glad that everyone seems ok weather-wise. I just about remember '87 (would have been about 4). I certainly remember walking through the local gardens and seeing all the trees blown down!
Today's mission, as planned:
Good DFW things
- Charge phone in work
- Work some overtime
- B/L/D from stores (cake
/soup/chilli) - Heating still off
- Housework when I get in
- Load Kenco reward points into account
- OH not in for dinner so he will probably buy something

I have only recently started to read this board.
It is so refreshing and positive compared to other boards such as the credit cards where I usually hang out.
In my humble opinion, you folks are amazing and have encouraged me to be even more thrifty.
I look forward to reading your tips and salute you all. Keep it up folks, be determined, don't despair and you will eventually be debt free.You may question anything I say. Just be polite, otherwise you go straight on to my Ignore List, which funds a good old fashioned knees-up every Xmas. Cheers;)0
