Taxable income

Started a job in Aug, part-time position paying £8,400 p/a.
I was unable to give my new employer my P45 as the DWP never sent it to me after signing off. New employer did ask me to fill in a P60 at end of Aug.
My Aug & Sep wage slips both showed i was on an emergency tax code. I have received my Oct wage slip & this also shows the same.
How long should it take to assign me a correct tax code? I was also under the impression that i should not be paying tax at all as i'm a low earner. Assuming this is the case how do i get the tax i have wrongly paid back. It's £400 over the last 3 months.

It would have been a p46 you filled in in the absence of a p45
See what this months wage slips tax code is and your refund will be paid back to you through payroll.
If your tax code isn't correct this month, speak to payroll, or indeed speak to payroll tomorrow and ask if its sorted, if not, ring HMRC.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Firstly ask your employer if they have received the new tax code for you. Then, if the answer is no, why don't you ring HMRC and ask them if they have received the P45 from the DWP. Your employer can't change the tax code from week 1/month 1 without your P45 until HMRC tell them to. HMRC will need to notify them of both the tax code AND your earnings ytd before you started working for your current employer.0

It will have been a P46 or a Starter Check List as it's now called. What box did you tick?My Aug & Sep wage slips both showed i was on an emergency tax code. I have received my Oct wage slip & this also shows the same.
You are not on the emergency tax code if you have paid £400 over the last 3 months. The emergency code of 944L Mth1 would have seen no tax taken on that salary. It sounds like you are either on a BR or 0T tax code where you are being taxed at 20% of everything. The BR or 0T tax code is used in the absence of either a P45 or P46 so it seems that your employer hasn't used the P46 or you have ticked the wrong box.How long should it take to assign me a correct tax code? Once the correct tax code is used you will have an automatic refund provided it's in the same tax year. Might be a good idea to contact HMRC as even the emergency code of 944L Mth1 will be better for you although you won't get your refund until a cumulative tax code is issued.0 -
I have received my Nov payslip. This shows my tax code as 944L1, my previous slips showed OT1. I have paid no tax this month but have also not received any rebate.
I was wondering if the tax has been taken due to me being paid JSA. I started claiming JSA in Dec 2012 but it will obviously only be taken into account from April 2013.0 -

You won't get a rebate until you are off the L1 tax code as that is non-cumulative. However it's better than before as at least you are not paying tax now.I was wondering if the tax has been taken due to me being paid JSA. No the tax was taken because your previous tax code was 0T1. OT means no personal allowance so everything is taxed at 20% or 40% accordingly.
HMRC need the figures for your JSA before they can apply the correct tax code.
