Frozen Mushy Peas

Morning, I bought some frozen mushy peas from Iceland (rtc'd to 50p) thinking they would be slam in the microwave for a few minutes to cook.
No such luck! Add to water and simmer gently for 30 mins adding more water if needed.
Apart from cooking the whole bag and refreezing them into one portion packs, is there a more MSE way of cooking them please?
Many thanks

  • We just buy W8Flours Processed peas and brew them with pepper until mushy! Far healthier!

I'd be inclined to experiment with microwaving from frozen and from thawed. Nothing is going to harm you, it's not like it's meat you're messing with.

BTW (and please don't be insulted) are you sure that the hob cooking is the only one on the bag?

Maybe that's why they were reduced?;)
  • Morrisons frozen ones on offer at the moment, had these before they are fine and can be microwaved
  • maman, hob is the only method of cooking! That is probably why they were the only thing in the rtc'd freezer in Iceland!
    Will experiment and report back
    many thanks

The instructions may only give the hob method but I would be tempted to try microwaving anyway, put a portion in a bowl or jug add some water and give short blasts at a time and a stir until they mush.

I buy these bags of mushy peas and cook the whole bag at once.
To be honest microwaving is no quicker than the hob, they just take ages to go to mush, hence why i do them all at once split into portions and refreeze. (i have been known to get out the potato masher to help them)

They do taste a lot better than tinned, so i think worth the effort.

I was thinking I may try "cooking" them in the slow cooker. Theres a lot of how to's on google. Not sure how much water will be required though, otherwise they could turn into soup!!

There's a thought! The peas, a ham hock , onion and some water - pea and ham soup.
Probably easier than cooking 10 portions, separating and freezing them.

  • We buy these quite often as my lovely husband prefers them to tinned ones. They are a pain in the proverbial to cook but once done they are nice. We have speed it up a bit by starting on low with no water then when they are about defrosted add a bit of boiling water, whack the heat up and stir like a maniac for a minute or two keep adding water as you go along and then top the water up to half the amount of peas add a pinch of bicarbonate of soda turn down and leave for ten mins ish. Then add more water if necessary and stir for a minute to break the peas down more... That's is folks :)

Have never tried microwaving them though..... might give that a go.
  • Slightly off topic but the tinned value mushy peas freeze beautifully. I only usually use half a tin at a time, hence the freezing.
