have to deal with a baliff today, nervous and unsure of what to do

I have to call a baliff today to tell him that myself and my husband will not be communicating with him via telephone but only in writing. I need to get his address, unless I should be sending the letter to Bristow & Sutor. He's pretty intimidating and Im really nervous.
. I don't know what to do, what to say and how to respond if he starts being nasty. I have also noticed that on the breakdown of fees he left for us he has charged us for two visits on the same day, even though he obviously only came one and two levies when there is only one. Any advice would be appreciated.
Debt as of March 2018, £794 rent arrears £4273.7 debt, £900.70 in pay day loans, total £5968.40 . Total debt today £5968.40

Phoning a bailiff to tell him you won't deal with him by phone? You sort of undermine yourself straight away. Write a letter and keep a copy. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0

Is it a bailiff or a debt collector ? can you just elaborate a little on the debt he is attempting to collect ? NEVER ever phone these people, they will twist and turn your words, try to trip you up, and generally say things they would never put in writing, write to them instead, and never allow them into your home.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Google to find the address or get it from the court.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks for the replies. He is a baliff but he didn't put his last name on the documents nor do I have an address for him. I have an address for the company, thats it. But you're right, a letter is better regardless.Debt as of March 2018, £794 rent arrears £4273.7 debt, £900.70 in pay day loans, total £5968.40 . Total debt today £5968.40

I always thought that you didn't have to open the door to Baliffs unless they had authorisation from a court to enter your premises?
I have always understood, that only certain organisations have the right of entry. e.g. your gas company if there is a risk of a gas explosion.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0 -
you can write and challenge the fees whilst you are at it.
I agree that phoning a bailiff is a bad idea, particularly if you are asking that they only communicate in writing.

Can I just ask what the debt is they are supposed to be collecting ?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Thanks for the replies everyone. The baliff is collecting our council rate arrears. I have spoken to StepChange and we have worked out a DMP so thats one thing. I will be contacting the council on Monday to see if they will take the debt back. I will also be contacting Community Legal Advice, and Citizens Advice to find out our legal rights. Once I work out what I can and can't do, and if the council wont take the debt back, I will then contact the company to query the ammounts and the fact that he has put our caravan (our home atm) on levy. Hopefully CAB will help us deal with this baliff and contact him on our behalf. I will certainly be back here to let you all know how it goes.Debt as of March 2018, £794 rent arrears £4273.7 debt, £900.70 in pay day loans, total £5968.40 . Total debt today £5968.40

That sounds absolutely wrong in principle, but I don't know enough about it to know whether it is wrong in law. Hopefully someone will know the answer. Meanwhile I would ask have you signed a walking possession order and is your home on that?its_maths_not_magic wrote: »Once I work out what I can and can't do, and if the council wont take the debt back, I will then contact the company to query the ammounts and the fact that he has put our caravan (our home atm) on levy. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0
