Engagement Ring

Hi,

I've been with my girlfriend for a while now, and think its time I did the decent thing and asked for her hand in marriage.

I hjave about £1500 to spend maximum, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips to best utilise this money. I know nothing about diamonds or the best places to get rings.

I assume high street jewellers are not the best place?

I want the ring to be platinum or white gold if platinum is out of my price range.

Please help me maximise what I can get for the money.

Cheers,

If you live near enough to Birmingham why not take her to the Jewellery Quarter and buy your own stone and have the ring made to your own design and budget. It'll be so much more special and totally unique.

Noooooooo High Street Jewellers are absolutely rubbish and over priced - you could pick up an absolutely amazing Antique Platinum/18ct Gold ring for that price and it will seriously increase further in value.

My eternity ring has 1ct Diamonds all over.. very heavy 18ct Gold in Platinum setting with Baguette cut Diamonds in the shank even.. vertically... (hard to imagine).. and we picked it up for £585. I got it valued for insurance purposes and it was valued at £1900.

You would be a fool to buy new Gold. My Engagement ring is a Trilogy diamong ring, again in Platinum shank and was bought for £285 at an antiques fair... is exactly the same as modern copies but worth alot more and is much better made!!

Check out Captain Diamonds on Ebay... she sells stunning Antique rings at good prices and you will get your value for money, for sure.

Stay away from High Street Jewellers, but also, be careful of sharks!!!

AND... you can always negotiate with Antique Dealers over the price...

    I'd suggest local jewellers.
Since I work for one haha.
But anyhow, they don't mark up as much as chains like Hallmark and are more likely to let you haggle.
I wouldn't suggest going to Antiques fairs etc, as you need to be able to go back to the place in case something goes wrong. Like if the stone falls out.
Also, a proper jewellers will be able to give you certificates and help educate you about the jewellery, since you don't want to have to rush into picking something.
Btw, check your girlfriend doesn't mind antique jewellery, I know some people who'd be offended by second hand engagement rings..
  • Best value for money: get a 2nd hand ring
Want it new? Go to Hatton Garden (London) or the Birmingham Jewellery quarter.

Learn the 4 C's (Colour, cut, clarity, carat) and work out what's the most important to you (e.g. small good quality stone Vs big yellow-tint stone)
  • I think you should ask for her hand and then choose a ring together, after all she has to wear it for the rest of her life!

You could buy a cheap (£20 ish) silver ring just to give her on the occasion of asking, but then chose real one together, I bet she will still have the token silver one 10years down the line as well as the oter more expensive gorgeous one!

    O and good luck

Hi like other mse's, i also got mine from the jewellry qtr in Birmingham.

We stayed in b ham the night before then spent sunday looking for the ring.

You can haggle there and do. I got a gorgeous 3/4 carat diamond on a platinum band and they will make the ring however you want it.

It saved us well him! loads.
