Tax rebate

  • If you provide the tax codes on each of the forms P60, I may have an answer for you. Please also advise the date that you started this job.
  • Tax codes as requested-
    10-11 is 46T
    11-12 is 218T
    12-13 is 281T
These are the final tax codes taken from p60s

Just been sent a new one yesterday stating that 2013-2014 is 960L. Assuming this is a new amended one in light of my 'professional subscriptions' that they now know about.
  • Started job in September 2009

Thank you for your help :)

I've checked all figure against p60s and all are correct if I have been checking it right. Salary minus allowance then 20% tax and checked the figures against what I actually paid (according to p60s) and all are overpaid by the amount the rebate calculates.

In answer to some of your questions- never had a company car or any other type of benefit. And yes leading up to teaching I worked loads of student jobs for 5 years (more than one at a time often) and just use to write asking for them to check my tax at the end of the year (usually resulting in small rebates), but I assumed when I started teaching as that was my only job and was a proper salary it would all be straightforward.

And your code numbers for these years were?
The only thing that is constant is change.

OK - the use of the 'T' code would very much suggest that HMRC believed that you had another job or some taxable benefits. Those with two jobs usually have one with an 'L' suffix and one with a 'T'. After budget changes employers will generally be asked to adjust all 'L' codes.

If you definitely had no other income in those years, the money is yours. I would also be asking HMRC to review 2009/10 tax year as it is VERY unlikely to be correct - detail everything that you earned and benefits received from 6th April 2009 to 5th April 2010 and explain all of the gaps! You have until 5th April 2014.

Your code for this year, 2013/14, should be something like:

personal allowance 9445 plus subscriptions 160 (guess!) which equals 9605. The final figure will be replaced by an 'L'. If it is lower than this, tell HMRC immediately - more overpaid tax!

(Edit as I noticed your new code - big refund in November pay, methinks!)

    Looks like a good Christmas!
  • Thank you so much for your help. I did include all documentation for 09-10 with the rest but will go double check it to make sure.

I'm guessing this will become even more fun after I go on maternity leave in January! I think I have my head around most of it now though.
  • No problem - it does show the importance of detail though. Had we known the tax codes, either zygurat or myself could have 'got there' a little more quickly!

To throw another spanner in the works- for all 3 years this rebate has been calculated for I wasn't in the pension scheme. I know that meant more tax/NI etc but that wouldn't change what these figures are would it? Just make it more favourable for me now I am?

It won't make any change to your tax figures but it will make a big difference to your pension.

Why didn't you join the pension scheme as soon as you started teaching?
