Ideas for a new traveller?

Options
Hi all

Have had some great inspiration from this forum already this year, you are all so creative.

So, my Mum has a holiday booked to Nepal for early next year and I thought it would be nice to get her something related to this.

She hasn't travelled to that part of the world before, but already has all the guidebooks etc she might need. She is going with her partner who is a seasoned traveller - he goes off on treks and she will be flying out to meet him at the end of one of those, but not actually trekking with him (I believe).

Any suggestions?

I was thinking of maybe a headscarf type thing to fit in with the cultural dress? Maybe some biscuits that are easy to eat in case of dodgy tummy. But other than that, no ideas. Happy to do one "big" thing, or a hamper...

Hit me with your great ideas!

A decent water bottle or two - look at the "sigg" range..
A small but decent backpack to carry water bottle, small biscuits (eg ritz crackers) trail mix (nuts/raisins you can do yourself), perhaps small packs of wet wipes/tissues (toilets in Nepal can be ...er...primitive/lacking running water/paper etc)
A small but decent torch - perhaps the wind up sort to avoid the need for batteries...
Check the temperature at the time of year they're going as it can be frying by day & freezing by night.
Suggest that she takes GOOD comfy walking boots - even if not trekking & you can put in some good quality walking socks (try thorlows) for her.
IMODIUM :D several packets of the stuff &
electrolyte powder sachets that you add to water for when you've to use the Imodium :rotfl: try these in boots "Dioralyte Sachets Blackcurrant - 6 Sachets" £3.29

Anti-mosquito stuff such as jungle spray...

A lighter to remove leeches (don't ask how I know, just trust me on this one) touch the end of the leech sticking out of you with a flame & it'll leave..

Some sort of penknife with scissors/screwdriver/blade etc...

Probably more to come, need to have a think

oh & use the backpack as your "hamper"

  • I've heard a pashmina style scarf is good. Can be used as a scarf, shawl, folded up as a cushion and as something to sit on too.
  • I'd second a pashmina - great when cold on the plane, cover up in the evening, over head if needed etc etc.
does she read a lot, does she have a kindle? I love mine when I'm off on an adventure
does she have a camera for capture all her experiences?
a small microfibre towel is also useful when off travelling
  • Pashmina - buy it in Nepal - that's where it comes from - all that region - you'll get the real thing for a fraction of the cost - a truly useful souvenir...:D

A long thin cotton scarf to go round your neck helps if it'd very hot...

  • I don't know whether they would need them but you can get water purifying tablets, incase you are out and about and need water to drink.
  • Some brilliant ideas here, thank you. Think I will have to orchestrate some conversations with her to suss out what she's already got.
