CSA Overpayments

I was just wondering if anyone has ever been successful in claiming back overpayments from the CSA.
My husbands son has just turned 19 and about 6 weeks before his birthday my OH contacted the CSA to find out whether the case would be closed as we were aware that he had left college earlier in the year. Over the next 3 or 4 weeks the CSA tried phoning then writing to pwc to ask her to confirm this. She did not reply to any of their calls or letter so they told my OH that they would make enquiries to see whether she was still claiming child benefit as this would determine whether or not they closed the case. My OH received a call from CSA on Friday of last week telling him the case was closed - and had, in fact, been closed since 30th August.
They confirmed they had not sent her the last 2 payments that my OH had paid and were holding on to them, but had sent all other payments. Not sure why they would have closed the case but carried on sending the payments to her?? They have sent the case to referrals now - they explained that as they owed my OH money, they would have to check to see if he owed them anything before they work out how much to return to him in overpayments.
My question is - has anyone ever been successful in getting their overpayments back, and how long it took?

Yes my husband has had overpayments paid back several times, mostly without much fuss or delay. On one occasion he had over paid by several hundred pounds and they wanted to hold on to it and reduce his payments over the next couple of years. The overpayment had happened due to their delay of almost a year on a reassessment and it had been a struggle to pay it in the first place, so he wanted the overpayment back. A letter of complaint resolved the problem and the overpayment was returned to him.
There have also been lots of annoying times when he has rounded up his payment to the nearest pound because he wasn't sure of the exact amount due and then they send him a cheque for a trivial amount of pence. He once asked why they did that and he was told that they can't accept more than the amount due (he is on CSA 1)0 -
Justontime - thanks for your reply. He is on CSA1 too, from the way they spoke it sounded as though it was quite straightforward to return the 2 payments which they were holding (although they said he would have to wait for 2 months until they had cleared their backlog) but were a little more cagey when pressed for an answer about the other payments that they had inadvertently taken and passed on. Oh well, we will just wait and see what happens, hopefully it will be resolved without too much headache.0

If he pays monthly I think those two payments should more or less cover it? I think (but I am not sure) that CSA is paid in arrears. If the PWC has been overpaid she will be required to repay the difference, but you will have to pester CSA to make sure that they recover the money.0
