I dont have malt extract, only Waitrose sell it & they have sold out.

Any ideas on the topping? I want to make it now!

Try the chemist for malt extract - I remember buying it from Lloyds a few years back. If you can wait until tomorrow of course.

I always thought malt extract was basically marmite? I have no idea though.

Marmite is yeast extract, not malt, I can't imagine marmite would be nice on a chocolate cake

Holland & Barrett have malt extract for about £2.60 a jar which lasts ages. I use it for making malt loaf and always buy it there.
