Flour by any other name...?

Options
Hi there

Does anyone use the basic value (any supermarket) plain or self raising flours? I'm trying to cut down on my food costs, and I do quite a bit of baking. What, if anything would the difference be between the basic value and the standard product? Besides cost and packaging?

Anyone any experience?

Thanks

I've used them for years and have had no problems with them whatsoever.

A thread started not long ago. Cheap flour, a false economy?

The general consensus was cheap flour is fine.
  • I buy the value flour and have found it fine. I regularly make scones, rough puff pastry, muffins and use it in cooking to thicken.

When you want a plain flour, supermarket's own is fine.
It's the odd flours (rye, spelt, emmer) that are worth the rarity money.
  • My tesco value self raising flour has bits in.... that go through the seive too... *yuk*

Providing you sieve it (which you should all flour in any case) 'value' flour is fine, in my experience.

I have used it for years with no problems at all. As Public Enemy said, 'Don't Believe the Hype', although I suspect they weren't talking about branded flour.....
  • I used Sainsbury's basic flour for years but, now that I have drastically reduced my shopping trips there, I buy Aldi flour instead. Both fine. (As is Aldi lard and cooking margarine for pastry!)

I've used Tesco value plain and self raising flour for years and have noticed no difference. My mum recently gave me some bags of mcdougalls and I could do a proper comparison and I didn't notice any difference.

BTW the flour at Tesco is currently 3 for 2 which makes the value ones 90p for 4.5kg
