Time to face the music!

I will try not to ramble too much as I type, but I've never been very good at keeping things short really so please forgive me!

Recently I turned 21, I've got a degree to start in February from home and I've got debts. Not a massive amount, but for someone without a job (at the moment) and only JSA to live on, £3,300 is a lot of money to owe.

Problem I am facing is that I have no money whatsoever to spare towards my debts until I start working, and while I'm making a huge effort to find work, I can't magic a job up out of nowhere.

I have several debt collection agencies trying to get their various dues back from me, but I've got nothing to give! I can't even afford the repayment plans they're offering.

I can't afford a DRO, a debt management plan or any form of repayments at the moment in short.

So, the question I have is, what in the heck am I meant to do? Do I just leave them to fester while I wait for a job to come along? The companies are not being at all resonable even after they consider my circumstances.

I do hope this all makes sense and I don't simply sound like a fool.

Kind regards,

- David

    Hi David and welcome

Have you had any advice from one of the debt advice charities at all?

Are the debt collectors writing to you or phoning?

When did you last pay any of the debt collectors? you could offer just token payments of £1 each per debt, or you could write to state that you cannot afford anything currently.

If you want a stalling tactic for a couple of months-ish then you could start by sending them all a prove it letter and waiting for them to provide proof you owe the money and proof they have a right to collect it. When/if they send that proof then you could stall them for a further month by sending them letters to state that you are seeking advice from one of the debt advice charities.

If they are hassling you by phone then you could also consider sending the telephone harrasment letter on one of the above letters see the info in this link - Harassment by telephone

Prove it letter - Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter

or "It costs nowt to be nice"
  • Hi there Tixy thank you so much for your reply!

Unfortunately I struggle to have anything left over at the end of the month. I am trying hard to rein in my finances but something always gets in the way.

I have sought advice from various places but unfortunately I cannot afford to go ahead with their advice.

I have stalled them all too many times to count and now they're completely fed up (I guess anyway) and just demand their full and final payment. A couple are holding for the moment but only for a 30 day time period because I told them I'd try and find the money to start a repayment plan. Only thing is, I really can't find the cash.

I'm getting letters every day, which I generally open, check the company and balance and then ignore.

No phone calls as I changed my phone number.

    Kind regards,

    - David
