Which slow cooker?

I'm looking to branch into slow cooking but not really sure which to go for.
At the moment it's for two adults but I do freeze portions at the moment to haev at a later date so something that would maybe cater for 4 would be ideal.
I have this reserved but being honest it was mostly chosen over similar as the colour matches the kettle and toaster. It did have good reviews too though and has money off. Looked at the major SM and they don't have it any cheaper.

Any recommendations? Ideally am wanitng black or this metallic red as it'll be out in the kitchen and I'd like it to match.

thanks

  • Well very sadly I broke my lid yesterday on mine so I'm researching now too vs replacement lid costs. Gutted no aldi here. Found The a Independent online has a top 10, Lakeland being their top but only 1.5 litre, I'm going for 6.5 again. I found lots of old threads too on the subject :)

Aldi had a 3.5l one on offer for £12.99 a few weeks ago and I bought one. It's my first slow cooker and it's been great so far and used 2-3 times a week, they are going to be doing a 6.5l one for £17.99 and I'm tempted to get that too and either just use whatever size I need at the time or give the smaller one to my parents.

The 3.5l one takes a medium chicken which gives 6-10 meals for me and OH depending on how I use the meat (usually a cooked dinner, curry, soup, sandwiches and in a stir fry) with other things to bulk it out. I do also freeze some soup and curry so get plenty of meals from it.

If I get the bigger one I can get even more batch cooking done and even more for the freezer.
  • I bought the largest cook works one from Argos, when I decided to try slow cooking.

I went for it because it was cheap, incase slow cooking wasn't for me. As it turns out slow cooking wasn't for me & its now gathering dust in the cupboard.

However I would recommend the cook works one.

This one is a Best Buy in the Which? magazine.

They warn that the handles get hot during cooking so use oven gloves but otherwise very good.

    Interesting little lo down :)

I was after a morphy richards one, and I will buy 6.5ltr, but since mine died last night :( I nipped out and got the 3.5 crockpot at T's for £17.99 as none of the MR in stock near here. I feel complete once more!:T

Went into @ldi last night and they had one left, took it but when I got home realised I would need an army to feed to be able to use the 6.5lt one they had. Luckily I had also picked up the @rgos MR one to compare and that is a much better size, still generous for only 2 adults, so @ldi will get theirs back (did check this was ok when purchased).
In comparison (without using) the @ldi one was very heavy and I can't imagine trying to lift it when it's full, the MR is much lighter. Thanks for the warning about the handles, the instruction book also warned this.
Picked up beef from the butcher at lunch to make stovies tomorrow so will let you know how I get on.

    Thanks!

The top scoring (82%) slow cooker according to "Which?" is:
    Crock-Pot SCCPRC507B-060.

Unfortunately it's a bit pricy at around £53.

I have a Morphy-Richards that I picked up at a boot sale for £5 last year.

The MR SC has been used twice now and both times produced great results. Not tried anything too exciting yet, mince and stovies but been very happy with them both. Can't believe how soft the beef was in the stovies, I can be really fussy with meat and don't eat much of it but I'll definitely be eating more if it keeps beign like that.
Think i want to try a HM chicken curry next, have chicken in the freezer so will take that out tonight and find a recipe to put on tomorrow.

I bought a timer at the weekend too so that I can get it to go on while I'm at work to avoid overcooking :)

    Thanks for all the comments/advise
