Direct Debit For Outstanding Credit Cards

I find that setting a direct debit and then giving the cards to my partner works best for me.
Does anyone else have any tips on ensuring that cards are paid off in a timely fashion without resorting back to them?
Paying any extra cash you have spare also helps obviously!
