Affordable Birthday Goodies?

Hi folks!

I started a new job 3-4 weeks ago and it seems to be tradition that everyone brings something in when it's their birthday. It's my birthday later on in the week and I was thinking maybe taking one of those large tins of chocolates ('Celebrations', 'Roses', 'Heroes', etc.) into work. I take a couple of buses into work and it's a long journey, so I think these are probably the most suitable thing to take in as I'm sure they'll be in one piece when I do get into work. However, I want to get a good deal. I am sure I'm not imagining that I saw an advert in the newspaper saying that these tins were 2 for £7, but whenever I've been into my local Morrisons, I've not seen them. I know 'Co-op' are doing them 2 for £9 starting from tomorrow. However, there isn't a Co-op near me, so getting there would end up costing more than what I could save. However, I'm open to options, if anyone can recommend anything suitable or a few suitable nibbles for me to just pop in the upstairs canteen whilst people are having their break/ lunch, that would be great. My budget is £5 but ideally as I've only just started work, am part-time and not been paid yet, if I can get away with spending less than a fiver then that would be great! Supermarkets local to me are Morrisons, Asda and Sainsburys.

Thank you all in advance!

Cheers!

Heroes & Roses are £5 a tin in Sainsburys & Asda, according to www.mysupermarket.co.uk
  • Thanks Chris! I looked on "mysupermarket" but I've never used it before and could not see a grocery section.

I'm just wondering whether I've imagined this 2 for £7 deal at Morrisons. I was thinking if I could get a hold of those, I'll have my birthday and Xmas sorted in terms of taking munchies in for work!

Doughnuts are pretty cheap, I know Tesco do 12 for £1.

One office I tech for has a cream bun birthday routine - it isn't at all cheap, but nearly every week has a birthday.
Another floor loves biscuits, especially shortbread, in tins... (I wouldn't dare scrimp with them though.)
+1 for Waitrose' Quality Street for the affordable win this week!

I think Luckystar's suggestion is good - but only you will know how many you want to buy for.
You can also get packs of mini doughnuts, brownies, flapjacks etc in sainsburys & probably other supermarkets.

if you go onto mysupermarket's home page, there's a grocery tab on the top right of the page & then once into grocery section, just put in 'Quality Street or 'Roses' into the search box.
When you have the results & after you've clicked on the item, you should also see what price it is at other supermarkets.
You can also change supermarkets on the left to give you an idea if they have something similar but perhaps a different weight.

If it was for others' birthdays then scrimping (or boycotting) is sensible. But once a year...?

I don't know how many you are catering for, but perhaps you could buy a selection of 'funsize' chocolates that are currently on special offer at a lot of supermarkets (intended for 'trick-or-treat' night!). I have found that when I take a tin of chocolates, people take 'a few' and put them in their pockets.

Asda were doing some for £1 a pack ... in mine were: Maltesers x 10 pkts - Mars x 16 bars - Bounty x 10 bars. I bought mine for goody bags for the dustbin men (I used to give them some money in their card, then MANY years ago I saw the one collector open the envelope, take out the money and put it in his pocket, then throw the card in with the rubbish ). All the staff have since changed, but I feel it's better this way, anyway.

    :)
    If it's cheap, I'm cheerful!
