Condensation on chest freezer

I hope this is the right place, plenty of people seem to have chest freezers on here.
Went out to the freezer this morning, (it's in the outhouse attached to the house) and the 2 sides that I can see are wet with condensation. It's a big freezer 4ft long.
I've never noticed it before and it's all ways been outside. Approx 8 years.
The freezer is 85% full and every thing is still frozen. Power light on.
I will give it a wipe down when school run over with.
Obviously wetness and electric don't work very well together.

Any ideas??
Thanks and bye for now x

  • I`ve read this post a couple of times, and the puzzle has stuck in my head and provoked pondering....
    1. water vapour condenses on cold surfaces. Freezer still working, outer surface cool (is it metal? Or plasticy covered?)
    2. water vapour is wetness evaporating, or steam from somewhere...what else do you have in the outhouse? Anything wet? or a tumble dryier?
    3. It has rained an awful lot lately. Is the outhouse damp, or leaking somewhere?

I`d be thinking try to air the outhouse a bit, leave a door open (weather permitting!) and check for sources of damp in there..
Do let us know if you solve this puzzle, please.

    Hi thanks for your answer/questions.
Dried it all off this morning, gone out again now and it's back again.

    It is plasticy covered .
The boiler is also out there but has not been used since March/April.
And it never had any condensation on it when we had the snow and ice.
Nothing wet has gone in there. We don't own a dryer.
    No leaks, or damp patches.
The old wooden door is self ventilating.

Even with all the rain we have had. Last night the temperature was still above 12.

Looks like I might have to give the relative a kick up the rear end to come and fix the boiler. That way there will be some warmth in there.

Hang on that's not very mse putting the heating on to keep the freezer warm. :rotfl:
  • Hi

We have a very old upright freezer in our utility room. It gets condensation of the top of it and has done for the last year or more. If you were to leave a cloth on the top it would be very damp in a few hours.

I think its probably something to do with the age of the freezer although it still works fine. I do keep wondering how long it will keep going though so I use it for bread, vegetables etc and keep the meat in our other freezer!

Dont know if this helps but I do know a freezer can create condensation - even if its working fine.

    Cheers 'Yorkshirelass'

I'm glad some one else has had it as well.

Knowing my look it will 'die' over Christmas, chock a block full of food and no delivery slots until after the new year.

Fingers cross it's just having a paddy.

We used to have this on our chest freezer in the garage, and it was just the level the food was upto, a bit like the bathroom cistern when it gets condensation only up to the level of the cold water. I always thought it was the really damp mild air condensing on the cold metal of the outer case, might be wrong though. We always left the door opened more when this happened which seemed to help.

I've just been reading on google and that it might be the door seal.

Going to have a look in wilko tomorrow for some of that sticky draught sealant and give that a go.
