Should I ring Nationwide?

Morning everyone and Happy Father's Day!

I will be going BR this week.

I have a Nationwide Flex Acct which has no overdraft but has debit card and cheque book.

Should I ring them and let them know that I am going BR and ask their advice or should I wait to see what they will do?

I know from reading the forum that some guys have been lucky enough to keep their accounts open as I would really like to hang on to my debit card if I could as it does make life a bit easier - but I am sure I can cope if they want to give me a cash card. :o

They are not one of my creditors so I am hoping that will be a mark in my favour.

Thanks in advance.

Definately ring them. It's up to the OR to decide whether they have interest in the account. Once this is decided, the bank then decide what they will do.
I have never heard of Nationwide letting a BR keep a debit card, but we have just successfully opened a Flex Account with Cash Cards.
We also have a Co-op account with a Visa Electron debit card, that is becoming more widely accepted.
Both of these accounts were opened post bankruptcy.

Let us know what they say, cos I am in the exact same position. Except I did declare my impending bankruptcy when I opened the account.

  • I'd speak to another member of staff, maybe someone higher up. The Flex account is recommended for BRs, so they should allow you to have it unless there is something else on your records stopping the application going through.

As for other accounts with them, I found out today that I couldn't get access to one of my accounts because the OR had contacted them & the address on file was subsequently changed to his. It's being sorted out now, but if you still want the account you'll probably need to provide the OR with an accurate account balance & ask him to send a letter to the branch giving permission for you to have whatever money is in the account & use it. You might be better off opening a new savings account & closing the old one.

Hi, just a very quick update.

Spoke to them this morning - they were as useful as a chocolate teapot!

Apparently they cant give me an answer until they are informed of BR - which is Thursday.

I drew out all money this morning so if they decide to freeze it, then I can pay all wages etc into my mum's account until I get things sorted.

Might ring them again Thursday anyway just to let them now about BR again and see if I can speak to someone who knows a bit more about it.

Hope everyone is okay - will pop back in later.

I am with Nationwide and when I went bankrupt I spoke to them in person at the branch and they said just to let them know when I declared. I let them know on the day and two days later the account was ready for use again. Very helpful and friendly staff, all credit to them. I even chat to the lady I spoke to now and again and let her know how things are going and she is lovely. I missed having a debit card but recently go myself a splashplastic card which is Maestro. £5 to buy, £4.95 annual fee and then just top it up at Paypoint outlets for 30p per £10 topup. Considering the credit card fees, this is a small price to pay.http://www.splashplastic.com if you are interested or http://www.moneysupermarket.co.uk if you want to compare other topup cards.

I seem to remember some one else having problems opening a Flex account in branch with the Nationwide and when they rang the on-line number and was told that they should have been offered an account. I hve a feeling from some of the things that have come up on the board that in bank staff for Nationwide are not that savvy on their product.
