Co-ordinating Interviews

Hello
On a positive note, I've finally started getting interviews for jobs I'm keen for but now I'm encountering another problem in that they just don't give enough notice to work around my current employment.
I applied for a vacancy advertised on Thursday application due following Tuesday (all competency based questions, so not "easy") and then received a letter on over a week later giving an an interview date / time just short of a week later.
I've contacted them and asked if they are interviewing on another day and received a very ubrupt No.
I only work Bank but that day is literally one of very few days I've been asked to work (no hours, lots of bank staff + xmas coming up plus contracted staff get first dibs). I've been without work for nearly three weeks (which I devoted to completing applications) and now I've been given some hours they clash.
A second interview have agreed to rearrange (date clashed again with a hospital appointment, the only thing I have on that can't be changed!) and they offered me the day before which was also another day I was asked to work.
I'm beginning to wonder if the person running the world is sat up there coordinating these things to work against me!
Any one else have similar problems?

I've always found employers to be inflexible over interviews. You're "told" when it is - and any organisng to get the day off is often impossible and they won't change the interviews.
So many smug people saying it's easier to get a job when you've already got one, but I've always wondered how they think that when you can't get the time off to get to the interviews.0 -
I have always managed to get times that suit me and that's when I was in work and not in work.PasturesNew wrote: »I've always found employers to be inflexible over interviews. You're "told" when it is - and any organisng to get the day off is often impossible and they won't change the interviews.

One wanted to interview me at lunch time the very next day once and I was told the interview would last one hour but I could not get there have the 1 hour interview and back to work in one hour so I told them I could not take an extended lunch and they agreed to see me after work. We’ve had to remove your signature. PN - I've been told the same and have wondered how that's possible when asking for time off is difficult. I only work restricted days and still I am struggling as they seem to "know" what days / times will be unsuitable.
AP007 - You're very lucky!
I've had to tell the interviewer that I will get back to re whether I can make the interview which is mad! I've spoke to my employer to see if I can arrange a swap of days (which they really don't like us doing) or if I can cancel it altogether. I am loathe to do this as I will lose a full days wages (not to mention look like I'm being unreliable) and they may not allow as that will leave them short staffed as they may not be able to arrange cover at such short notice.0 -
I've always found employers to be perfectly reasonable about taking time off for interviews, providing you take the time as paid or unpaid leave, although obviously, if you're hourly paid, you're going to lose the money by not working at that time.
I'd never try to rearrange an interview unless I was going to be away on holiday and I wouldn't expect to be able to even then.0 -
Yeah I've always tried to make the agreed first given interview time, annoying as it is, the ones I've 're-arranged' on occasion I've never been offered - sad to say
To the lunch comment; don't know if it is me, but I find that is the only time of day most employers will contact you about application funnily enough!!! weird don't know if that is just me!!
Hope you can find way round it - swap with colleague or time swap
Either way hope you have better luck then some! x0 -
I have been lucky and have always managed to negotiate when the interviews happen, a little flexibility on both sides goes a long way, especially if its a long recruitment process.0
