I have a chest freezer. Cost £134 and is half way between a single and double freezer. One of our best buys and means we can stock up on things and have plenty of meals in.

People do seem to vary in how much they value their freezers - yes, great for stocking up on bargains, using left overs etc. But you can end up with a number of Unidentified Frozen Objects.
I would take the one you can get for £40 - it will give you a good idea of how well you will use one.
I would also consider a vacuum packer - helps things last longer generally, but especially guards against "freezer burn"

    I think we've all been there!:rotfl:

Fortunately, since I started using these threads regularly, that rarely happens. I now keep an inventory and label everything.:D
  • I was looking at freezers and I saw one as advertised as being 4 pence per day to run. This was super A+++ energy rating.

I'd go against the grain and get a new one with the best energy rating that you could find. Over the lifetime of the freezer that could save a fortune. You could look for a second hand one with the best energy rating.

I also like an upright freezer as I suffer badly from Unidentified Frozen Objects so having easily accessibly drawers and not worrying about trying to reach to the bottom (can't imagine being able to do that!) suit me. I don't suffer so much.

One thing - the next one I get is going to be frost free because I cannot say on this forum how much I loathe defrosting it without breaking the rules on swearing.
