Problems registering HMRC Online

in Cutting tax
We wish to register to declare tax on the HMRC site. However, we cannot seem to register as a new user, because the information given seems to be contractory.
You have to register as a new user, but this then leads you to another screen which demands a registration number which we do not have - UTR code - as we are registering as a new user.
Has anyone else done this, because I have now read the instructions a dozen times, and I am still going down a dead end.
Cheers.

Before you can register online to complete an SA return, you need a UTR (which you say you havent got yet).
Have you followed the instructions here :

That is the link which I am using, and it is leading to a dead end, where it wants the UTR number which I have not got, despite the fact that I am registering as a new user, selecting individual, then self assessment.
So how do I get a UTR number if I have to use the UTR number to register?
Catch 22 or what?0 -
From the sounds of it you are trying to open an online account which is why its asking for a UTR. The online tax registration system will allow you to apply for one however if you are having issues then go to 'contact us' and select 'N' and go to 'newly self employed helpline'. Contact them and they will get you set up.0

"You'll find your UTR on correspondence from HMRC. If you can't find it, you can contact the Self Assessment Helpline and ask for it to be sent to your home address. HMRC can't tell you your UTR over the phone.
If you haven't completed a tax return before (or it's been a while since you did), you may not have a UTR. You'll need to tell HMRC why you need a tax return, by registering for Self Assessment, so you can get a UTR."0
