give London and Country mortgage brokers a call ( got this tip from martin lewis!) they are a whole of market,fee-free company,very highly recommended.I have "unusual" circumstances and they have been great in getting me a good rate mortgage.have used them 3 times now.
definitely read martins guide to mortgaging on this site.
speak to people who have bought a house before!!
look at other properties in the area, prices they have sold for etc.
you really need more knowledge before buying the most expensive thing you could own.
