Restoring a Rusty Fireplace

Hello
We have a black cast iron fireplace and due to a sick cat spraying (he has sadly now passed away) it has developed patches of rust. I would really like to make it look better by removing or covering the rust however I don't know how to go about it. The fireplace is securely fixed so anything done to it would have to be done where it is. Just wondered if there was anything straight forwards I can do to improve the look of it?
Thank you

Hi Rummer, not sure about the fireplace but when I get my dutch oven out after the summer I clean off any rust with that orange astonish paste, rinse well and then rub oil in - would that work?

Steel wool to take off the rust then Stove Black (from a hardwear shop) should bring it up a treat.
Done a few ........ OK about 18 in the past myself ... just be grateful you are not removing gloss paint that is a real pain.
About a fiver should restore you fireplace - so pretty MSE DIY really.
