cleaning a down/feather-filled coat

Has anyone got experience of laundering a down or feather filled coat?

Recently I got a lovely winter coat from EBay and as it's second hand I wanted to clean it before wearing it. It's a M&S one and the label says to wash at 40 degrees (which I have) and put it in the tumble drier.

I was wondering how long and at what temperature to dry it. I don't want to go round smelling of damp feathers  :rotfl:

At the moment it's in my condenser dryer on the synthetics cycle, which is cooler than the cycle I normally use. Silly question, but how will I know if all the filling is dried? The outside of the coat is polyester and is pretty much dry already.

If you put a couple of tennis balls into the tumble dryer with the coat, it helps the down/feathers to fluff up rather than sticking together as they dry.

You need to keep tumbling it until it's properly dry, you'll know because it will be all full and fluffy and you won't be able to feel any clumps. Depending on the fabric of course, you can tumble it on hot, it won't harm the feathers.

M&S coats are low tumble dry, chuck in a couple of tennis balls too. When you think it feels dry, take it out & hang on the back of a dining chair for 12-24 hours to air it fully.

Then go out in your freshly spruced up coat :D

I washed mine last week and everyone thinks its new...£6.99 in BHF shop, reduced because it had lipstick & makeup on...not any more it doesn't!!
