what sort of cake tins should I get?

  • I love my springform tin. I only have one, a 25cm, and I use it a lot for non-layer cakes, like christmas cakes, or big madeira or chocolate cakes. It's also handy for deep fill tarts or savoury pies (I'm dairy free as well).

I have about half metal and half silicone at this point. I love my silicone sandwich "tins" and I have a set of silicone muffin "tins" as well which I use a lot - I don't even use liners in them. I would not recommend silicone loaf tins though as they bow out in the middle in a really annoying manner when baking, so you don't get a nice, evenly shaped loaf. I've replaced mine with metal.

My other must have is my cookie sheet. I saved up and got two circulon sheets from amazon on sale. They're super flat and wide - they don't need to go on a rack in the oven as they fit into the shelf groove. As they're so big I can fit a full batch of cookies on each, without having to rotate trays in and out of the oven. They're also fantastic for pizza, scones, breads...anything that won't rise or run off the edge!

  • I mainly use my square (7 or 8 inch I think) enamel pans for baking, I line them with baking paper and then ice and cut into squares. I find this a lot easier than faffing around with round sponge tins and having to sandwich layers together.

I also use my roasting tin for tray bakes and my rectangular lasagne ceramic thingie for brownies etc.

I very rarely make round sandwich cakes, it's all a bit like hard work for me!

I'd echo TK Maxx for bakewear, they have some good stuff at reasonable prices. I have also bought quite a lot from car boot sales, it's often the old fashioned heavy, good quality items at decent prices where people are house clearing

  • I have loads of cake tins, I never use silicone as I don't like the idea, but use normal metal tins. The ones I use most are loose bottom or spring release sandwich style tins in various widths, plus a deeper one for larger whole cakes, a square tin for brownies, a rectangle tray bake style tin for tray bakes, millionaire shortbread etc, a swiss roll tin which I also use for various roulades.

It's worth checking out the recipes you intend to make, as these will stipulate the width and size of the tins you'll need.

I didn't list all my tins, just the "starter set" if you like. :p
    .

Hee Hee! yes, I have ambitions to collect lots of bakeware - and use it too of course. But SOOO helpful to have people's ideas on what the essentials for starting off are.

Pitlanepiglet that's what I've been doing, making traybakes in a roasting tin - as it's the only tin I have, those are the only cakes I've made so far. Glad I can admit to it now!

Had a look in Sainsbury's today and quite liked the feel of their heavyweight baking stuff - and I've a load of nectar points I could use, enough to get me a starter set. I want to check out Aldi and TKMAxx first though.

If you have a Wilkinsons near you they also do a good basic bakeware range - I have bought the really cheap ones and for the occasional bake with a parchment or baking paper liner I think they are fine! they do have a cheap as chips range and a slightly dearer range. Aldi bakeware - I have bought a few items and have been really pleased with them! good mid range quality!
I don't bake very often - but when I do I don't want the results spoilt by inadequate tins.

Too many tins here I think, some are now stashed in the shed lol.

Don't get me started on my "cutter" collection I can do you biscuits or scones in more shapes than you could eat in a year I reckon. Bit of a fetish really lol, keep buying them-I must stop :).

Off the top of my head I have, all the letters/numbers, Christmas stuff, Halloween stuff, dinosaurs, various teddies, various birds, various sizes of hearts, various sizes of people shapes-for gingerbread men and ladies, flower shapes, moons, stars, and butterflies to just name a few.

    Ali x

BTW I use them for other things like cutting fondant shapes for cake decorating as well.

Noooooo! don't tempt me! i have a horrible feeling that tins will be just the start of it. I've already been looking covetously at cutters. and other bits - I've got a nice wooden spoon and one spatula that looks like it's been chewed, and that's about it!
