Electoral Roll in Maiden Name

Hi All,

We sent our mortgage application forms back to First Direct on Friday. After reading a post on here, yesterday we decided to check our credit files. I realise now that we should have done this before submitting the application.

My files are in good shape at all three agencies. My wife's look OK at Equifax and CallCredit. She doesn't have much in the form of credit accounts, except her two current accounts, her current mobile contract, two old settled mobile accounts and a settled credit card from 2007. However, Experian are showing her as not being on the electoral roll. She is on there, but in her maiden name due to us getting married earlier this year. Equifax and CallCredit seem to have made the link between her current name and maiden name, as her maiden name shows as a financial associate, and her maiden name also shows on the electoral roll section. However Experian seem not to have made the link. This concerns us for two reasons a) apparently not on electoral roll and b) her settled accounts are not showing as these are in her maiden name - which is making it appear ad though she hasn't held any credit except current accounts and current mobile phone contract.

Is it realistic for us to resolve this BEFORE our application is processed? Should we let first direct know? Credit searches at Experian show that they have credit searched us both already for the first direct current account, but nothing yet for the mortgage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I should also add that we have already sent the electoral roll forms back requesting the amendment. They arrived last week and posted last Wednesday - but I understand that this won't be updated until January earliest!

when we was going through our mortgage we thought the same but in fact it did not matter as they asked for my wifes maiden name and they just looked at her maiden name for the history,
It was not a problem at all you will be fine at worst they might and i mean might ask for a copy of the wedding cert.

Thanks for that - very re-assuring! We have sent them a copy of our marriage certificate anyway. They needed proof of ID and my wife's passport is still in her maiden name - don't see the point in paying for a new one when it's still got two years left to run (we can just book travel in her maiden name). So we pre-empted they would need that anyway for confirmation of ID. Hopefully that will be enough to trigger them to credit check both names.

I've spoken to Experian anyway this morning - who have said they can link the two names together if we e-mail them a copy of the marriage certificate. We've done that and it should take 7-10 days. Hopefully before First Direct credit check us, but if not, sounds like they will check both names anyway.

Does seem strange that both Equifax and CallCredit have picked up the name change and linked the two records together, just through information supplied to them by the bank etc - but Experian have not?

Stressful stuff this mortgage application lark - I just hate not knowing!

We've recently moved into my parents in between selling and buying and I panicked because I realised I hadn't registered on the electoral roll at the new address.

    I used this link:
    http://local.direct.gov.uk/LDGRedirect/index.jsp?LGSL=364&LGIL=0
printed out the form, dropped it off by hand at our local council offices with URGENT - PLEASE PROCESS ASAP on the envelope and got a personal letter back 4 days later saying that they had updated the electoral roll. Much quicker than using the forms that they send out.

I've got half of my accounts in my maiden name and half in my married name and never had an issue with any credit checks - they just seem to be linked.

We pick up name changes from credit checks and credit account updates so this is strange, but sounds like we're updating your wife's report now. Also, as someone else said, the mortgage provider is likely to run a check on both names anyway. Good luck getting your mortgage!

    Hi James,

Many thanks for this! Frustratingly, despite being told on the phone earlier this week by one of your colleagues that we just needed to send a scan of our marriage certificate - which we did - we have today received a reply from a representative saying that we also need to send in an alias form in order to have the maiden name added. We have done this - but would appreciate it if you are able to fast track at all. Our new reference number is EMR9832900X and the reference number of the original e-mail was EMR9821569X. We have received a text today from First Direct saying our mortgage application has been agreed and credit check will take place soon!

    Thanks!
