PI claim / Work Records

I have started proceedings against my employer for a personal injury claim after it appears a piece of equipment they provided have caused heath problems. The solicitors have asked for previous employer details however I have been with the current employer for 28 years and cant really remember - the question can I check with the tax office and would they have records going back that far?

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Very doubtful HMRC will have records to be honest. Your best bet is to simply tell the solictors what you've told us.

You can obtain your employment history from HMRC National insurance Contributions office.

This will only provide a history of your employers for the relevant tax years that you have paid Class 1 National Insurance. Therefore details where you were employed (PAYE) but will not include any details of periods in which you may have been self employed. I have done this for clients going back as far at the 1960's.

The Inland Revenue can also provide a separate history (employed and self employed) but this is usually limited to the past 6 years.

    You need to write to:
    HM Revenue & Customs
    National Insurance Contributions Office
    Special Section A
    Room BP 1002A
    Benton Park View
    Newcastle-upon-Tyne
    NE98 1ZZ

Simply write requesting a copy of your employment history explaining that it is in relation to a claim you have against your employer.

When you say solicitors I presume you mean your employer's solicitors as if you were referring you your own (if you have instructed any) I would have expected them to do this for you.

Although, as suggested, perhaps advising your employer's solicitors that you have worked with them for 28 years will suffice (they may have sent a standard enquiry letter without giving it much thought, or checking how long you had worked there). I consider it is unusual to have to search back more than 28 years unless the condition you complain of requires it for one reason or another.

    Regards

    Thanks Phil,
The solicitors details were via my union, although it did occur to me that they wanted to make sure the damage to my health wasn't caused whilst working for another employer, (which after 28 years I think I would have noticed before) - just wanted to be thorough.
