Have you tried batch cooking - we do it (when we find the time), make a casserole / curry etc, usually in the slow cooker, and then you can portion it and freeze it so you've got something handy in... Cheaper to use a slow cooker compared to the oven as well, apparently it's just like having a lightbulb on - hope this helps :)

I make a weeks worth of sandwiches on Sunday and put 6 in the freezer. I do cheese, tuna mayo, sliced meats etc. Instead of bought frozen chips you could try a jacket potato, in fact if you have a microwave at college you can easily do something like baked beans and jacket potato.

You could also have porridge for lunch if you like it.
  • Risotto is easy to make and will warm up well in a microwave. I can post my recipe if you'd like it!

  • Thanks Mrs Cheshire - the recipe would be lovely!
I've actually just been working out my money / food shop for November.

    So... the plan!
    Breakfast: Special K
Lunch: Mon, Weds and Fridays - Sandwich thins, salad, cheese, ham (or turkey slices) and honey/mustard dressing (better than mayo!)
Lunch & Dinner for College - Wholewheat pasta with tuna chunks (the tinned stuff!) and sundried tomato
Dinners - Chargrilled chicken (Birdseye) with brown rice, OR chargrilled chicken and sweet potato.

It's crazy how much money I'll save just by having cereal for breakfast, always easily tempted by a sneaky McDonalds breakfast or Greggs bacon sandwich if I don't already have it sorted. It's a willpower thing as much as a money thing!

So, it's healthy (or I think it is....!), quick and easy to make!
    Open to any ideas though!

Lidl has a big selection of sliced meats if you eat them and their premium coleslaw and potato salad not bad. Iceland is good for cheese and pickles. ASDA and Lidl prices on pasta good. Lidl prices on fruit and veg are good as well.

Honey and mustard dressing is easy to make - just oil, vinegar, honey and mustard. Poundland often has cheap pomace oil (olive oil but not from first pressing), you could probably get cheap mustard in Lidl also honey.

https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk is your friend. It won't cover Morrisons or Lidl or Iceland but you can check these on company websites, ditto Poundland and 99p Stores. Do check weights on discount store stuff though as Poundland Heinz soups contain less soup for example.
  • Wow, didn't even know about that website!
I've only ever been in Tesco or Asda for my food shop but I've been told Lidl (or was is Aldi?) is really good! Thanks :)
