Smart Parking fine -ignore or appeal?

My wife received a parking ticket from Smart Parking in an Asda car park. Her crime was to park the front of the car over a pedestrian walkway (although there was still enough room on the walkway for people, trolleys, wheelchairs, buggies etc to pass).
The car park was gridlocked and she says she had no choice but to pull this far forward as the number of cars driving up both sides of one-way aisles was such that she would not have been able to get our son's pushchair out of the boot without getting run over.
My wife clearly wasn't the only one that thought the car park was hazardous as Smart Parking had slapped tickets on seven cars in a row, allegedly impeding this walkway.
Now, a lot of previous advice says simply ignore this ticket but my twittery wife has now read newer advice that it is better to appeal or complain.
What's the best course of action here? And do Smart Parking have any right to adjudge cars to be obstructing pedestrian areas (even when they're not)?
Many thanks in advance for your advice on what is a well-trod subject, I'm sure!

Wait for the Notice to Keeper, if you have only so far got the windscreen ticket. Keep the windscreen ticket but do NOT be spooked in to appealing too soon.
I suspect the postal Notice will arrive in November and will be headed up 'Notice to Owner' and will not state the contravention on it.
NICE NON-COMPLIANT NOTICE, SMART PARKING, I HAVE SEEN ONE OF THEM AND GOT IT CANCELLED FOR A FRIEND RECENTLY!
In the meantime complain to the Store Manager and see if they will cancel it to save you having to appeal when you get the NTO letter. Do not discuss it with any CS desk staff as they will lie and say they don't own the car park. It's a well-known Asda lie that they have been fed to say. ONLY the Store Manager will do and ONLY if he/she cancels this rubbish for you, his/her aggrieved paying customers.
I assume this was in England/Wales where POFA 2012 applies? If so, if you do later appeal and get a rejection, come back for help with the POPLA appeal wording.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
