I see my comping as a hobby and every win is a bonus. I love entering to win things that I probably would never consider buying for myself - for example, entering to win a casserole dish worth £150 or a designer handbag worth £1000 (I would NEVER even consider spending that much on a casserole dish or a handbag in the 'real world'!!!) So entering to win prizes that I would never own unless I won them gives me hope and encouragement.
I also get a huge buzz from winning for my family and friends and have save loads on giving them as presents on birthdays/Christmas etc.
Speaking of expensive casserole dishes - see this: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4792419 WIN A RUFFONI CASSEROLE DISH WORTH £495 - now to win that would be fab as I wuld never spend that on a casserole dish even if I was a lottery winner!:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea0 -
I work full time (often pretty long hours!) but don't earn a lot of money. So 'get a minimum wage job and you could earn more' is irrelevant to me - I already have a job.
I also certainly don't do 200-300 a day. Over the course of a month, it averages out about 40 a day. I enter competitions in my spare time, in the evenings when I'm not doing anything else. If I have plans then I might not do any competitions at all for a few days.
Obviously this means I don't win on a weekly basis like some more hardcore compers do. But I have won some really good stuff (£250 of vouchers a couple of times, an iPad mini, goody bag of Benefit make up, etc). At the end of the day, for me comping is not about making minimum wage to live on. It's about 'treats' - these are things I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford on my income, but by using spare time in which I'd be doing nothing else productive I have a chance at getting them.2018 wins: Aspinal of London jewellery box, Boudavida gym outfit, HP Pavilion laptop, The List party tickets, All Points East festival tickets, Kiehls moisturiser, By Terry cc serum, Nars Liquid Bronzer, Benefit highlighter, Nars illuminator, Fresh advanced lip trio set, Cetaphil sample set, signed copy of My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent0 -
I started entering as it was something to do whilst on maternity when LO was asleep (other than tidy house lol) and whilst relaxing with a cuppa!
Now I'm back at work, but I have a very long commute into work now so I still enter competitions to while away the time! As someone up above said, it is way more constructive than playing Candy Crush (the amount of invites I get for that on FB grrrr:mad::mad:)
A few of my friends have now got the comping bug after seeing my Dell laptop win on my timeline - Anything that stops people inviting me to play Candy Crush, the better!!!:D2014 Challenges: £2014 in 2014 - £700/£2014, Alphabet challenge - B,I,R,S

niftythrifty33 wrote: »This is the first time I've posted on this board. I really want to get into comping especially as I have a bit of free time at the moment. I just wondered, after reading posts on here it seems lots of people enter around 200-300 per day taking 2 to 3 hours. If you spent the same time doing a job earning minimum wage surely you could probably have bought the things you've won and had extra left over? so is it just the thrill of winning or is because it uses free time up that you would have otherwise spent doing boring stuff? I hope this doesn't sound offensive as that's not my intention, I just wanted to know before I spend hours and get addicted
Also are there any tips that are worth knowing? I also wondered whether the reason why I'm getting more and more cold calls is because of doing comps?
I have never won anything but would love to just to make it worthwhile sitting here for the past few hours
Thanks everyone
I work 40-50 hours a week at a highly stressful job. (60+ hours a week during bad times)
I spend the majority of my free time keeping up with changes in my industry.
I'd rather have a little destressing fun trying to win something I like but don't need than get a part time job.0 -
Thanks for the replies, please don't think for a minute that I was suggesting that anyone should get a part-time job instead of do comps, nooooooo. It was just a kind of thinking out loud question about how much time I might end up spending on my PC compared to how much I might actually win (in value).
I have been doing a few more but I get a bit confused about which ones to enter as there are loads that ask me to tick 'yes' or 'no' to receiving info from so and so, this can go on for pages and pages, usually to win an ipad etc. Are these just a scam?
I could seriously just sit for hours and hours doing competitions and reading through posts on MSE, then I could kick myself for not getting other stuff done! Never mind, it's all good fun0 -

If not my advice would be just stick to comps posted on here & use the MSE functionality,ie ticks & crossed,to track your entries.
If you find comps are are not posted please add them though.0 -
Hi, and welcome to the boards !! I've had some great wins (holiday to venice 42 inch TV, Blu Ray Players, £250 Clarins products, £500 shopping spree to name a few of my faves and I don't enter 300 a day. Its all down to luck as I am sure everyone will say
I work in an extremly stressful job and its just a nice way to unwind after a long day at the office. i only enter for things I would use/ like so its a nice surprise/ treat. I couldn't fit in a part time job as well as working 10+ hours a day 5 days a week but i can fit in an hour or 2 in an evening to unwind.
Good luck for the future and comps you enter ! xx:j First prizes back into comping after a break - romantic break to 2 to Venice/ Paris or Rome with romantic trip and a 42 inch TV and blu Ray amazing !
Thank you all so much and good luck guys and girls xxxxxx0 -

hi again
regarding the ones you say ask you to tick 'yes' or 'no' to receiving info do you mean the daily mag ones?
if it is there's a very helpful thread from compsalex on how to get them done quickly & it's usually advisable to answer No to them
Using Roboform to fill in "No Thanks" boxes in Dailies (1 2 3 ... Last Page)
there's also the advice in the comping guide about opting in or out
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1014121
11 If you opt in or out of their mailing / 3rd party mailings, does it affect your chances?
I ALWAYS indicate a big fat 'no' to both of those, unless it is something that I'd really like to hear more about or a comp you enter by signing up for their newsletter.
xplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0
