One ingredient of baking powder is bicarb [the others are cream of tartar + some filler, probably cornflour based]

So no need to chuck it, and the use by date is probably no reason to not use it IMO, if you have kept it dry then the ingredients should be as new for years I reckon, it certainly will not poison you

You could check the efficacy of it with basic chemistry, try mixing a bit with vinegar, if it fizzes then OK

As Baking Powder contains Bicarb, you can use it for similiar cleaning purposes & to absorb smells in fridge. Just put the tub of Baking Powder in your fridge to absord smells.

"Baking soda is another name for sodium bicarbonate.
Baking powder is a combination of baking soda plus a few other things."

'Bicarb' has also traditionally been popular for its usefulness around the house as well as for baking. It is a great 'natural' cleaner, deodouriser and mild abrasive. Use in solution to clean fridges, microwaves, teapots, cafetieres, filter coffee machines, glassware and kitchen utensils. It often gets a mention on Kim and Aggie's 'How Clean is Your House'!

Ps: I've got a tub of Bicarbonate of Soda & tub of Baking Powder & am just about to clean my fridge, just working out which one to use for what. :rotfl:
