Christening gift

I know it is not Christmassy but this is in the vein of when this board is about special occasions too...

In a fortnight my husband and I are going to become godparents to his nephew. It is CofE and I am Catholic. The little boy is nearly 2 so not a tiny baby. Although they are getting him christened, my husband's family are not at all religious so I'm not sure they would appreciate a Bible of any sort.

Are there any traditional gifts? My husband's family are quite into traditional and sentimental gifts. Do people still get christening bracelets? Or would that just be for girls or much smaller babies? Something in my mind is saying something about a silver spoon but have I made that up?!

I have a beautiful set of Beatrix Potter books to give him (I am an English teacher so he will unfortunately always be getting books from me!) but wanted to get him a more 'christeningy' gift too.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

    the books sound great!
Traditional gift for a Christening for a boy would be a tankard or maybe a silver money box. How about starting a savings account for him that you can add to each birthday/Christmas so when he's 18 or 21 his godparents can give him something very special (or cash towards first car etc)?

A silver St Christopher or money box seems to be the traditional option.

I'd go for books and something he could enjoy now.. he won't be interested in getting something to save for later if he is opening a gift it should be something that won't be taken straight off him and 'put away for later'

My girls got some beautiful things for their baptism but so much of it such as jewellery had to be put away for when they are bigger and the one who was 15 months knew the gifts were for her but not why she couldn't play with them. (they got a beautiful amethyst bracelet each, a charm bracelet made by their godfathers partner and a leather thong bracelet with personalised bits on) .. they liked the little handmade sock monkeys!
