Anyone reduce their credit limit whilst debt busting?

It occured to me in my latest LBM that one of the reasons I struggle with reducing debt is because when I NEED the credit it is there to spend. I'm tempted to start reducing my card limits as I go to make sure this credit comes down, perhaps leaving just one card at its current level. Would this seem sensible?
I am potentially planning on trying for a balance transfer in 6 months but or so but nothing more than that.
