Is "hobby income" against exclusive full-time employment contract?

My contract says I should have no other employment or business apart from my current job.

Would selling my books or craftwork on Amazon, getting advertisement money, be a breach of such a clause?

    In theory, yes.
In practice, provided you're hobby isn't particularly time consuming, doesn't compromise your work and isn't in direct competition or the same industry as your employers, they may be fine with it, but you would need to check - and, if they are fine with it, get it in writing!
We have a similar clause in our contract, however a couple of people have small hobby/businesses such as card making etc that they have had permission to continue.

Just ask your boss and get the permission in writing. Most bosses really won't mind. I did my job and ran my business for a year before leaving my job. They didn't know it would be such a success, or they might not have given me the permission....

Selling your old books - no, this isn't a business.

Selling your craftwork - yes, this is employment income and you should be registered as self employed for this part of your income.

Oh come on guys, so many people try to get extra money from additional work. I don't see the problem if your activity do not reflect in a bad way on your full time job. If I were I would not speak to my boss :)

Might be worth finding out why they have that clause. My company has it, but it's because we work on a shift system and the contract says they can change our shifts when they need to. They therefore don't want anyone having a second job that would mean they are going to be refusing to work certain days. A few people have online jobs which can fit around any work pattern and the company has no issue with that.
