Debt assigned to Rossendales Collect

This is my first post so sorry if I do it wrong/wrong place etc.
Anyway I am after some advice please. A few years ago I got myself into debt and as far as I knew had paid it all off, however a couple of months ago I got a letter saying my debt had been transferred from Arrow Global to Rossendales Collect and since then I have been receiving debt letters from Rossendales Collect. I haven't responded as I thought as soon as I did they would start to hound me. It is only for a relatively small amount £698.95 but I don't have that money spare, they have given me details of the debt, that it was with Kays (I am assuming catalogue - I have never had anything from them but I appreciate it could have been called something else as they are probably in a group) and the date that the agreement was signed (so again assuming they must be right) I can't put my hand on the letter at the moment but the date of signing was about 2000 I think. If it was a debt of mine I could very well have paid off it after that date though. Also I should add the debt is in my maiden name, I have been married and lived at this address for just over 6 years now so I have definitely had no contact in that time until now. This morning I have received a letter from them - red ink! - that I must pay within the next 7 days or contact them immediately and if not recovery action will commence.
What shall I do? I have no way of paying them (I only earn £4000/year) I don't even remember the debt but I am scared to make contact as then they will probably get more serious. And believe me the amount of interest I paid on all my debts 10 years ago taught me a valuable lesson!
Sorry for the lengthy message and thank you in advance for any advice.

The letter in this link may be suitable, because even if yours it would be statute barred by now.

If you haven't had any letters about the debt or phone calls then the debt is wiped as long as u can prove it.
I worked for AIC allied international credit and some we had to wipe.
when I worked there I was told it was either 4 years or 7 years I cant remember anyway regardless I would contact them and say its not valid or words to that effect!
if they cant tell u proper detaisl on it and provide the paper work which u signed I would go to town on them!
Im a newbie here so I don't know much about letter templates but there is bound to be one on this sort of thing, im sure an experienced member will be able to help u out

Hi I too am having Rossendales letters for a debt they say of just under £2000 for Aktiva Capital. This is over 13 yrs old and I have had letters from other debt collection firms about this before which I have ignored. Now Rossendales have got it and are sending me letters threatening a home visit. I am at odds what to do as I thought it had all ended with so much time passed I now have a new life and my days of debt have ended or so I had thought and now I am worried each day they will call. I have not made any payments or contacted anyone about this debt in 13 years what can I do? Incidentally I would be grateful to hear from anyone else who has been in this situation please.

Hi many thanks I have had a good look at all that and it is very interesting and helpful. I believe my debt (which incidentally I am not proud of it was just circumstacnes at the time) is statute barred it is over 13 yrs old and I have never contacted anyone about it in all that time so I just have to keep my fingers crossed that Rossendales do not carry out their threat and visit my home. I am like a cat on hot bricks each time I see someone or a car pull nearby, after already one heart attack it is worrying.
Regards

They won't turn up, they know the debt is unenforceable and they shouldn't even be pursuing it.0 -
They can't turn up without and invite.
But even if they did, just laugh at them and ask them to leave your property.0 -
Send them the statute barred letter.
If they continue to ask you to pay, send them a formal written complaint and report them to the OFT.
Not worth worrying about...:beer:0 -
Thanks everyone for your comments. It is good to hear that most people do not think they can do anything although I will continue to worry. They have been writing to me once a week and the last letter was to say they were going to visit in a few days if payment not made but other debt collection companies have done the same before them and given up, the debt has been going from one collector to another and now as I said Rossendales have it. Hopefully they too will give up.
Thanks
