Do I need Vista to take full advantage of Core2Duo?

I have heard that in order to take full advantage of Intel Core2Duo I should be running Windows Vista.
Is this true? I have recently purchased a new computer having specifically opted for Windows XP purely because I'd also heard that Vista is not yet compatible with all devices.
Have I made the right decision?
