A quick glance at the wind turbine page raises some interesting questions.
A 1kW turbine: to produce it's "rated" output requires a wind speed of 9m/s at a tower height of 6m.
A quick look at this map:-

shows that the only places with wind speeds anywhere near this are, in general, the least inhabited, inhospitable bits of the UK. The wind speeds are also measured at 25m, over 4 times the height of the wind turbine.
But I don't suppose this will stop slick salesmen trying to sell them to all and sundry !0 -
If you follow this link: http://www.bwea.com/noabl/ you can enter your post code, use this to find your OS grid ref, then find out the mean wind speed for your post code.0

Its nice to see someone actually talking realistic values for once. I looked into a turbine and tbh it just wasn't worth it for me. The amount of electricity it would make would be tiny and its impossible to work out exactly how much wind you have, unless you stick up a meter at the height the turbine would be. Big drawback when you have to have it 6 metres in the air in your back garden. You can't put them on your house because of the vibrations (OK I know someone have brought one out you can, but I think its expensive) so you have to have a huge pole and outriggers in your back garden. Not to mention you've basically got a huge blade going round 6 metres up in the air and you should keep its fall zone clear for safety..... thats a big area.
Of course as you say, it won't stop nice people selling them to unsuspecting members of the public......... or the house of commons

Thanks for this. Read through, was very interested.
Unfortunately, the guy cannot distinguish between a genuine enquiry and spam. Sent mail, followed up, finally he responded with "sorry cant help sounds like all the other scam emails I get"!! This cost him a genuine customer and referrals in Sri Lanka / India.0
