I love this idea!
I did something similar for my other half - he already had an Xbox so I decided to make him a bit of a 'man cave' for his birthday - I bought him a gaming bean bag chair (http://www.beanbagbazaar.co.uk/iex-gaming-chairs.html) which was great and all his friends were jealous! Not sure if I'm prepared to get the new console yet this year though!

Good 2 player driving game is GT5 - as GT6 is due to be released soon, it may be available at bargain prices. I've had it a year and still not had time to 'finish' it. Also, has great online play on PS3. Unless you've got a dual play tv, it works on a split screen.
I have a 250gb PS3 and not even half full 4 years on (and we've loads of photos, music, etc. stored on it.) I would suggest 60gb is sufficient for general gaming use. I would suggest the PS2 is too old hat - may struggle to get decent games, and not in HD so would look a bit 1990's !!! The huge extra benefit of a PS3 is the blu-ray (and 3d) playability which Xbox doesn't have. Also plays dvd's and video files viaq USB or external drive. PS3 also has iplayer, lovefilm etc. etc. Controls wise, PS3 controllers are still expensive, so if you get a 2nd hand console with only 1 controller , expect to pay around £35 or more for a second controller. Might get the odd second hand one popping up.0
