Elf on a Shelf??

Hi all,
Hoping that someone who has done this before might be able to help with some questions I have?! I have bought the elf on a shelf set with the book and elf. I have also bought the dvd. How do I start to introduce it? Do you just show the dvd and book in advance then one morning the elf turns up? Is it then you register it? Not sure what order to do things in! Thanks for any help
