Advice dealing with Lowell/Barclays

I recently checked my credit report and have listed a debt with Lowell for 400 pounds. This debt was bought from Barclays bank. I am not completely in agreement with the debt as it will primarily consist of overdraft charges gained when I stopped using the account and a direct debit which I had previously tried to cancel was continually taken. This was about 5-6 years ago when I moved abroad and forgot about it until I now returned!
I emailed Lowell saying I dispute the amount of the debt but will offer 150 pounds if they remove the default entirely from my record following some advice I read online. They are now refusing to deal with me until I confirm my current address and phone number for "data security protection". This has kind of put my back up as I don't want them to have the option of continually hassling me on my new phone/address. Any money I do legitimately owe would be to Barclays not lowell anyway and I think it may be possible I could reclaim some of the charges and they may even owe me. This also gives me a better negotiating point with barclays direct. If I was to phone Barclays direct and agree a settlement could I get the problem solved or is it too late now it has been transferred to Lowell?
Any other advice appreciated.
